Need to decide on Winter Tires

Hey guys !

First time buying winter rims+tires for my first car ever ('08 M3 GS)!

I work in a smaller city just south of Barrie where the roads are always maintained the greatest, lots of snow and ice on the roads during peak winter.

My question is, are there different types of winter tires, some better at handling snow and others at ice? Are there any that you can recommend for both snow and ice?

I am going to be visiting SimplyTire and/or Go For Tires soon and was hoping to get some more information prior to talking to them so that I can make a somewhat educated decision.
