View Full Version : Goodyear Eagle tires not much good this year

My Mazda 3 Sport 2008 came with Goodyear Eagle RS-A P205/50 R17 tires installed. After only 20,000 km of use, there is only 5/32 mm of tread left. A Goodyear dealer tells me this is normal. First, he says that the tires should not be used with less than 4/32 mm of tread. Then he says that these tires are high performance and should never have been installed on this vehicle to begin with. This car is driven mostly by 56-year-old wife and an alignment was done in 2009.
Has anyone had similar problems with these tires. Should I consider a class action against Mazda for using inappropriate tires on this vehicle?

I would chalk it up to the tech not knowing what he is talking about, and not something that your going to win in a class action suit. The RS-A is an All-Season tire, and not one of my favourites... LOL. I am confident that Mazda and Goodyear know more than this tech to put the tire on the vehicle from the factory.

While 20,000 - 30,000KMs is not much wear, the tire is probably only rated at 280 treadwear also.

People with the OEM RS-As on this forum have range from 20K - 80K KMs with these tires. There doesnt seem to be much rhyme or reason, they are not very good at all.

There was some good discussion here on tire tread and that tire came up.

The RS-A's are garbage for driving. I'd advise you to change up to winter tires especially for the winter as it may give you both added safety and peace of mind. My tires lasted me around 30k

All factory installed tires are crap, no matter what, just because the have a brand name does not mean they are the same tire.

That's a bit harsh to say that all factory installed tires are crap. Some are exceptionally bad but you can't say all. Tire manufactures bid to supply tires for models so it's up to the company to decide which ones are best suited to their needs. Sometimes a tire that looks good from specs does not perform up the the hype. But you're already ordered xxxxx of them for that model run. Do you think it's coincidence that the RS-A's are no longer equiped on 2010 mazda 3's?

holy sh**, and I thought it was just me :chuckle. I picked up my 06 in April and I'm sure the rubber was practically new... I was like "YEAH! SCORES!" then I noticed that I really chewed through them quickly, I was like WTF? I'm not that aggressive (anymore)... I'm pissed 'cause I know it's gonna be all over the place up when the snow comes, as I can't quite dish out $6-800 for snow rims & rubber right now. Then only to replace these GYr's by mid summer 2011?? dammit! :flaming

Do yourself and everyone else on the road this winter a favour and don't run those tires in the winter. If the tires are pretty much useless anyway just mount a set of snow tires on your rims now and pick out some summers or all seasons after. you can get decent snow tires for about $400 for all four of them mounted and balanced about $70/tire plus tax, mounting balancing. That will be less than your deductible for an insurance accident, plus the amount your insurance will go up especially if it's determined that you were at fault.

They are not the same Potenza's you would pick up from Simply Tire, or Exclusive....Well maybe on the BMW. But most manufacturers make a different tire to put on these factory cars. It has the same name, but it is NOT the same tire, they use cheaper compounds in them. Thats why the Potenza you pick up from Allen may have a 80 000km rating, while the ones you get on the car from factory only have a 50 000 km rating.

^What he said....even if the model number is exact match...it is NOT the same tire. OEM tires suck, unless you get into the really high performance vehicles. Even then...on Porsches etc they are still not the same tire that you would buy from a vendor...even though the model numbers are an exact match. This is true of motorcycles as well.

Replace them immediately, I had these tires when I got my car (used) and I nearly rear-ended somebody not 4 days afterwards, on light snow. What's worth more... new and better tires, or your car and possibly your life? Eagle RSAs are made from recycled bubble gum, that's how bad they are.

Well not really, but the whole tire is crap.

I put 50k on my stock goodyears... rotating them every 8k and always making sure the pressures were at 32psi
never drove on them aggressively or put a high load (if you pack the trunk full of crap, then pump the rear tires up higher... to 36 or perhaps 38psi).... just standard daily 40km mixed highway/city commute

Another option would be to pick up a used set of winters. I picked up a set of almost brand new snow tires for $135 for all 4 last year.

These tires are terrible. My dad's have lasted almost 70,000km but he's right on the line, and the ride with them absolutely sucks.

As many others have said, just buy a cheap motomaster-like set of winters for now, and save over the winter for all-season/summer tires. I'm running Yokohoma ENvigors in the summer and they're extremely quiet and grippy. The threadware so far on them is also good after one season (April-Mid November).

i had a pair of goodyear eagle's on my mustang a long time ago, and hated them for precisely that reason. they ended up looking like drag slicks after a few seasons...

I agree on the most part with what everyone has been saying about these tires. Tread life is garbage although I really had no issues with the performance of the tires on wet or dry roads in the summer or in the winter. A bit of ice or snow dusting when its cold though and you might as well not have them on, same feeling I bet. I've never owned snow tires before I got my M3 and my first winter was full of close calls. I've completely spun out in the middle of the highway at 120 KM/hr, narrowly avoided rear ending different cars on various occasions and my person favourite, rolling backwards and then sideways down a hill into traffic behind me (had to jump out of the car after throwing it into park with e brake on across 2 lanes and try to stop it by hand along with a few helpful bystanders who ran to my rescue).

Last weekend was my last straw with them. I have put 25,000-30,000 KMs on them. Driving on the 404 from work, about to exit when there's a loud thump and then a continuous fan noise and something smacking against the wheel well on the front. I pull over right outside of Mazda HQ (bastards!) surprisingly and do my inspection. What do you know, my front wheel started coming apart where the mesh of metal wires were visible and loose smacking against the inside of the wheel and front side of undercarriage. The rubber was cracked and cut open in various spots. I wasn't sure if the tread wore down completely or something sliced it to that level. Barely made my way to Jimmy's at Simply Tire and after taking a closer look, thank god I made it in once piece. The winters are now (much thanks to Jimmy for doing me a solid on a friday after he was suppose to close) on and I guess I will be wheel shopping in the new year. I am also looking at class action law suits or information on warranty through Goodyear for this tire. Unfortunately, the Eagle RSA's are not listed under the threadwear warranty list (surprise surprise). If I knew this when I first purchased the car brand new in 2008 I would have sold them day one and got something else.
