I just added a little bit of silicone around the outsides which you can't even see.

LOL.... I toyed with that exact same idea... I ended up only connecting my sides to the tails and rears to my brake lights (as per my avatar)

I got a set used, should have siliconed up around the seams and where the wires go in as I have moisture in them now. I ended up doing the rears for brakes and sides for signals, they look pretty decent.
