View Full Version : Trying to find a fitness gym in Richmond Hill/ Markham.............

So as some of you know, the days I come into the office....... I take the 407 from Mississauga, exit Leslie, and then take Leslie up to Via Renzo (which is located between Major Mac and Elgin Mills). For those days I go to the office, I'm too tired to go to the gym after driving all the way back to Mississauga.
So I'm looking to find a gym located somewhere close to Leslie, anywhere between the 407 and Elgin Mills. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?!?!?!?
I know it's a bit of a stretch, but I thought it would be worth a shot asking anyone here............
Thanks.

It's not at Leslie but there is one at Yonge. It always looks super busy though. I've never personally been here though. Just drive by it a lot.

I think there's a few goodlifes in that area. With good life if you've got a membership at one you can go to all the other ones

^That depends on the membership you get, you have to pay something like $10/month extra to get all access.

really? Maybe that's just because it's part of my buddies corporate plan that he can go to any goodlife

^ Yea, I know I have to pay extra if I want that option.
I'm trying to find a cheaper gym, GL is too expensive

There's Snap fitness at Leslie St. and John St. It's just south of 407, 24/7, and you can go to different locations. Check it out http://www.snapfitness.com/corporate/club-locator

Snap fitness is good as long as you live pretty close to the gym and don't mind driving home in sweaty clothes, no shower, or sauna/steamroom facilities.

GL is expensive unless you have a corporate plan. There are community centre ones. They seemed ok.

As mentioned about GoodLife, the ability to use the different gyms is something you pay for. In addition, there is an extra level on top of that (platinum or something) that you would need to pay (an extra few $ a month more) for use of certain clubs in downtown Toronto and in downtowns of other major cities in Canada (Calgary, Vancouver, etc.). The add-on to use other clubs is something you can easily add or remove as you wish. I've never had any problems removing features from my membership (such as towel service).
GoodLife is pricey (thank goodness for corporate plans!) but having gyms available just about anywhere you go is a HUGE plus, especially if you've got a contract that you have to pay through the nose to get out of! In smaller cities, GoodLife is often the only option.
Oh, and, most GoodLifes are 24 hours on weekdays. One of the ones here in Waterloo is the only 24/7 club in Canada. It's FANTASTIC! =)
There is a WynnFitness just north of Yonge & Elgin Mills on Yonge and they have a few different locations. I used to go there and it's a terrific location, excellen facilities and equipment and very friendly staff.
There are also Snap Fitness locations here and there (one further North on Yonge than Wynn).

^ By corporate plan I guess that means your company has a special deal with GL?
I have a so called corporate plan but I barely save anything, like $2 bucks a month. :sad

Thanks guys about the comments regarding Goodlife.
You guys are correct, GL is a little higher in costs... but my concerns are more towards convenience of location. I`m just trying to find one along the route I mentioned in the initial post.
Where is Hillcrest Mall....

We`ll talk later this week when I come in.
Thanks Peter...
Yeah, I`m looking for a gym near my work. When I work from home, going to the gym is no big deal. But when I come in to the office, by the time I drive home I`m too tired from the drive). So I`m hoping to join a gym in Richmond Hill/ Markham as well.

Hillcrest Mall is basically 15 mins east of Vaughan Mills.
If there's an LA fitness, I'd choose LA over GL and Premier..

16th/Yonge but at that intersection, it's not Yonge, it's Clarke Blvd I believe but either way, it's 16th/Yonge.

I'm pretty sure multiple location access is part of the deal unless of course they have a multiple tier for membership plans

Extra to access other Goodlife locations? That's got to be a new thing. I pay $26/month taxes in, and can access any club in Canada, other than the platinum ones. If you can take over someone's GL agreement/account, you also inherit their rate. The guy I got my account from a few years back essentially paid $20/month, however they instituted a minimum per-month rate the week before I signed up. Try looking around kijiji/Craigslist/RFD for someone looking to get rid of their agreement.
I do know, though, that they have "cheaper" contracts where you can only access the clubs in a specific region (ie. all Mississauga clubs).

Apparently under under the Thornhill Staffed Hours section or their site it states "As a Snap Fitness member, you can take advantage of any of our locations worldwide, day or night. " Snap would be good if you travel around a lot, especially to the States. But a bit more on the pricey side, $539.40/year.

I worked for a subsidiary of Magna over the summer so I got to take advantage of the Magna Corporate Rate. It's not a huge saving but even $7 or $8 a month I saved is a nice difference. I also got the Magna-Rogers plan which was a pretty decent rate :D

$45/month is not much at all, especially if that's after taxes, and even moreso given that you'd have access to clubs all over North America

If you're after a real workout, try crossfit. Unfortunately locations are few and the price can be high. BUT in 20-30 minutes you will work every muscle group and you'll be dripping with sweat. Unlike regular gyms where it's mostly standing around and posing....

I go to this gym. It's not very big but they've got newer machines and it's pretty clean. FYI, there are no change rooms/showers, just two washrooms that are large enough to change in.

Thanks again everyone for their input... I really appreciate al the help.
The reason why I wasn't concerned as much with the price is all of these fitness clubs/ gyms are all the same..... negotiable. Costs and fees with all these places can always be negotiated.... especially if you pay up front. Anyhow, after alot of research (and a little luck)... I signed up with Snap Fitness. Costs were really good, best of all..... it was on the route I indicated (there's a location right on the northwest corner of Leslie and Major Mac).
Thanks again everyone for all of your help.......

Awesome! I knew about that location, but I didn't suggest it cuz I didn't see it in their "Locator". I thought they shut it down or something.
Have fun working out man. Been working out at my work gym also, helps relieve some of the stressful work life.

Pogi, mind sharing how much you're paying?
Little off topic but does anyone know anything about Markville Fitness at McCowan and Bullock (behind Loblaws). Their prices seem amazing compared to GL.

PM sent.
Reason being is that I don't want to advertise what I worked out with them. You may be able to work out a better deal, the same deal, or not even the same deal....... but you'll never know unless you try.

Here's where i've been going -> Points to basement <-
Oh, and this. http://www.beachbody.com/product/fitness_programs/p90x.do
It's all you need lost a ton of weight, much better cardio. You can pirate a copy off torents (I dunno if this board frowns upon torrents, if so just delete this part) Or else its just $120 for the dvd's + chinup bar.
The post-workout drink is optional but highly recommended by them, and by me. You get a full nutrional planned for your new diet.
p90x -> $119
chin up bar -> $60
recovery drink -> $45
Weights @$1.49/lb at play-it-again -> $200? I suggest 15's 25's 35's 50's.
GO nuts.

Yeah I know alot of guys who used P90x and lost a ton of weight... Like most things it will work if you stick to the program. But working out at home isn't for everyone.
