I don't know too much about computers but I do know that my sister has the HP laptop that you linked there and she loves it. For the price you pay, the quality is great!..especially compared to Gateway. i too have an HP notebook and I am very pleased with it. Mind you it has much higher specs but still, the overall build quality and usability is phenomenal in my opinion, especially when considering the price you pay. And the reason why the Gateway has a higher original cost is because it is smaller. 14" laptops have less component capacity so they are trying to fit the same components from that 15.6" HP into a little 14" laptop. In general 14" laptops are more expensive because of that...

Looking at the specs, they're pretty much identical. The only thing different between them is the display and audio chipset, wherein HP has larger display and uses Altec Lansing.

Other than that, it depends on which brand you prefer and the built quality for them.

Looks like a pretty good deal for $379.99 tho!

Nothing but horror stories from Gateway, but HP is no prized pig either. Personally, I think the specs are a bit weak and if you can wait for something a bit better to come along (pre-christmas sale, boxing day sale, etc), i'd wait. As I recall from my DJ friends, the processes involved in their work are kind of CPU intensive.

Related: Seriously Intel? 1M Cache, 2.30 GHz, 800 MHz FSB in 2010?

I've had my HP for 6 years and never had an issue with it... I love it... My next laptop will be a HP again

Its a Pentium lol, what are you expecting for $379.

Pentium has become the Celeron of the new age, and Core has replaced Pentium for the mainstream/high-end market.

It's essentially a Celeron CPU. That said I agree, if you are going to use the laptop for DJ'ing and other activities, get something with more cache, and if possible a 7200 RPM HD.

Personally I would stay away from Gateway. IMO their products are poor quality.

Both laptops are outsourced to the same overseas manufacturing co. So there will be very little difference in terms of quality. Buy whichever has the specs you want and pay close attention to the warrantee.

At this point...if you can wait til boxing day, you'll get a better deal on older current models.

To be honest.. I worked for a computer store for couple years...
I would stay away from HP and Toshiba and ideally go toward lenovo, asus. (although bit pricier)
You really get what you paid for.
For the sound card... you would most likely need external sound card.

I should mention that Intel is discontinuing the Core 2 Duo's soon (January or February) so you'll see a big wave of clearance soon =P

yah... i bought that hp back in the summer with the i5, but same body. a lot of people ( including me ) are experiencing screen flickering issue on this model, i remember reading this somewhere..
and i believe the display isnt the greatest either, only display 1366 × 768 , so if u have a big screen and wants to watch movie on it, chances are it wont fill up the whole screen
oh... it doesnt have bluetooth either, iuno if that matters to u, but i can't connect a wireless bluetooth mouse to it, or my phone.
personally, i probably wont go back to hp again

i never used gateway, so i cant say much for that one

-1 for HP.
I have one for work and in the first two years I replaced the battery and power supply twice each, and replaced the motherboard once.
Since then it's been fine, but it was a real PITA early on.
I just got a new HP laptop last week. I really hope I don't have to go through all that again.

The monitor LCD screen resolution has nothing to do with the graphics card output resolution capabilities. If your HDTV is 1920x1080, the graphics card should be able to handle that.
If you're concerned about external display capabilities, make sure the laptop has HDMI output.

Rick, for $379, you could get an i3 laptop on sale. Shop walmart for acers, and I've seen Future Shop/BB have i3's on sale for $399.
i3 laptop, 3-4 GB RAM, 320-500GB hard drive, Intel integrated graphics should be more than enough for what you need.

T4500 is an ancient processor, it's really ridiculous that retailers are still trying to sell them in their "new" laptops.

Well I'm not the most technological person there, is but I've done some geeking in my days, So i'll throw in my two cents.
You're scaping the bottom of the barrel here.
To start off with.
Stay away from HP like the plague if you tend to bump things around, replacement parts from HP cost an arm and leg.
Gateway is an introduction to computer laptop.

320 GB hard drive is fine for a typical user, for a DJ? Maybe not so much. I don't know how much music you plan on storing, but it might force you to get an external hard drive.
The gateway has better RAM because it's DDR2, 3 GB is pretty low for a DJ.
The processor is enh...... horrendous . I'd suggest going for an i5. i7 if you have a few dollars hanging around. But if push comes to shove, an i3 will even do a better job.
Graphics? Don't even try, you have a GMA (In both) not even a replaceable chip. GMA = Graphics Media Accelerator. On a scale of 1-6 with 1 being the best, it's 4.8.
The HP has slightly better audio because i believe it has a replaceable chip. Either way, both lousy quality sound for what you want.
The HP does have a HDMI port, that there is one form of HD sharing capabilites, not that the sound exported will actually be in HD

Suggestion 1 Toshiba Satellite 15.6" Intel Core i3-370M Laptop (http://www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/product/toshiba-toshiba-satellite-15-6-intel-core-i3-370m-laptop-l655-07y-brown-l655-07y/10155051.aspx?path=4c23b4238db8e113f992bbd13a9eb77 7en02)

Got money? I'll just leave this here. Don't expect you to buy it, but let's just say the sound could light up a small city (http://www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/product/dell-alienware-15-intel-core-i7-720qm-laptop-am15x-english-future-shop-exclusive-am15x-11650e/10149247.aspx?path=cb334c10519df16166bb829400b0ee7 3en02)

Of course, it's all up to you.
This is just my two cents.

.

what i meant was connecting it to a tv. mine has hdmi output... and my tv is 1080p... but it just wont fill up the screen with the right resolution..
