View Full Version : Brakes Squeaking when in Reverse

Hey guys, so more recently as it's been raining and snowing a lot more, my brakes have been squeaking really really loudly only when in reverse and right after it's been parked overnight. I just had my rotors and pads replaced in September. I brought the car back to the shop and they took a look but they didn't find anything wrong and couldn't recreate the squeaking.

Have any of you had this issue or know why my brakes are squeaking in reverse right after the car is parked over night?

Search. Common occurrence.

This is a common problem with most cars.... it usually occurs after you wash your car or after a rain/snow storm. After you drive the car for 1 km or less it should go away... if it doesn't then there might be a problem. :)

the cold brake squeal is common particularly with the early 3s, it is NOT common with "most cars".... the issue are brake pads/brake caliper design... mazda has issued service bulletins to correct this problem... obviously your car is out of warranty, so any fix requires money

hawks always squeal when cold... you have aftermarket parts, anything aftermarket you are throwing unknown variables into the mix... no one can conclusively tell you how to fix your problem unlike people having stock pads

No, Hawk HPS don't always squeal when cold. Hawk HP+ sure, but not HPS pads. They are no more prone to squealing and arguably less so, than the OEM pads.

Agree on the rest concerning variability of aftermarket parts.

Mine does this but realllly loudly..... I find it's only when I park with the ebrake on. Every time I go to back up cold/car wash/snow throw it in reverse doesn't matter if I'm going slowly or fast it gets extremely loud . But since my ebrake cable is now snapped :( .. no more sound lol

I've got magnum rotors and HP pads, and holy are they the worst brakes i've EVER driven. Can't say i'm overly impressed.

I have this combo as well...I think pads are good as I've come to abrupt stops and people are like "damn, you got good brakes!" (different people in the car have said this)...but next go around for me, I'm going with good ceramic pads.

The Pads are good. The Magnum rotors, especially cross drilled, are not. You're better off with OEM blank rotors which are actually good quality for the price and Hawk HPS pads as a combo.

If you're not going to be taking your car to the track, there is absolutely no reason to use ceramics for street driving in a MZ3. If you track, different story and you should look mainly into buying top line slotted rotors also.

no need for slotted and/or drilled rotors for a race car either... this isn't the 80s

+1, Magnum rotors are SHIT!!! Can't wait till they are all wrapped and toss them away for some stoptech or powerslot rotors...

Are they needed, no. You can run blanks easily enough. However, good slotted rotors when combined with proper racing pads will out-perform blank rotors plain and simple. Cross-drilled rotors (I am not a fan) are only a decent option when they are cast.

so in what way does slotted rotors outperform blank rotors?

so in what way does slotted rotors outperform blank rotors?

My comments were specific to tracking your car. If you track your car and need to do a great deal of long braking points at speed, slotted rotors will make a significant difference in terms of pedal feel, brake fade and overheating. And no, before you start, I am not talking about expelling gases since most modern brake pads don't have this issue. Overall, the slotted rotors will equate to improved braking performance and more confident braking in a track application. This is my experience in both cars and karts.

At colder temps and on the street, blanks will probably outperform slotted rotors in terms of stopping power and overall generic performance and will also prolong the life of the pads, since slotted rotors eat through the pads much quicker.

Hope that clarifies it.

think like this... track and high performance brake all squeak... so just stay calm and act cool when it squeaks :chuckle
