Thanks guys! I am pretty happy with it. I got a new strap and mis-measured, so ended up with an 18mm strap when it fits a 20mm. I'll probably replace it one day but for now I'm happy with the fit!

I really like that Crown & Buckle strap, maybe something alone those lines
thats interesting. a quartz movement and tritium lume? is it also sapphire?
Sivart444
02-11-2014, 08:02 AM
Yeah it is an interesting combination for sure. I hadn't even considered it could be sapphire but now that you mention it, it is 20+ years old without a knick anywhere on the crystal.. Hmm. Triton lume and swiss quartz movement. Coudl be re-lumed for sure.

I just don't like the fact that without a smartphone link, they are useless.
Not quite. Works perfectly fine as a watch without being linked to your phone. When linked to the phone, it is useful to avoid having to look at the phone when getting text messages. The nice part is that you have a watch, but when you have your phone near you, you also have an external screen for notifications.

The Pebble looks much better on a bracelet. I do like the idea but i'm so much more in love with the mechanics of an automatic watch. Even a nice quartz, its got some soul. I have enough gadgets and even though i see the appeal i won't get one until its been dialed in a little more
Let's see some pictures people!

Honestly I wasn't even aware of it until now. These aren't really on my radar, to be honest I really like the analogue angle to my watches. Plus I switch them so often I wouldn't get enough regular use out of it.

Thanks! They just brought out an updated version, with a blue bezel and black date wheel. Really nice but I still wouldn't pay $200 USD (or $280ish CAD) for the MSRP. $50 off of eBay is acceptable though haha.

You shouldn't leave a dead battery in a watch for too long. The acid could eventually leak out and destroy it.

Yobokies (http://s161.photobucket.com/user/yobokies/library/Mods?sort=6&page=6) is capable of some amazing modding work using the reliable Seiko 5 watch as the base.
Keep in mind that the Seiko 5 is water resistant up to 100m so it really is not a "diver's" watch per se.
Examples of his work:

Curses..... if you search this thread you'll find that I expressed my distaste for replica watches, although I like "homages" (different brands with similar designs). But I haven't yet found an homage which really scratches the itch for an Omega Speedmaster.
Then I discover there is a replica which uses a proper mechanical chronograph movement (Seagull ST19).....

loki B/c of daycare etc, see previous discussion haha.
Believe me I want a genuine one and I appreciate their value, but it's not in the cards at the moment. Plus I love having some variety, I'm not sure I would be happy going from 6-7 watches to 1.
I'm not saying I'll buy a replica. But one having a quality mechanical movement has my trigger finger itchy.

Good enough to make GQ's top watches of 2014 list (#15) good enough for me! My wife actually got it for me for my b-day along with a watch box for my expanding collection......she had a really tough time finding this one and had a few jewlers and shop owners here in the GTA tell her they couldn't get it and 'good luck in finding it'.
I'll snap a pic of my collection sometime and post it - nothing extravagant but it's coming along.

Grabbed a reproduction Tudor dial to go in my Parnis "Submariner". Some say replica, I call it a mod. This isn't a replica of any specific watch, since Tudor didn't make a Submariner with this dial or bezel insert.

They're giving away 2 Orthos dive watches on Dec 16th. All they need is your email and you can unsubscribe from any newsletters afterwards. Enter here (http://virl.io/VgWaXJB).

The Legends Kickstarter project (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/lewandhuey/the-legends-racer-from-lew-and-huey-inspired-by-le) is running too. Pretty much the best take on the Tag Heuer Monaco that isn't a direct ripoff IMO. If you want one make sure you back the KS; if it doesn't get funded it probably won't get made.

Polish brand G Gerlach is planning a retro dive chronograph. 200m water resistance and a Seiko mechanical/quartz hybrid movement (battery operated, but a 1/5s chrono function which snaps back mechanically). Named the Enigma, as it was actually Polish engineers that cracked the WWII German Enigma coding machines. 4 color variations planned. Total price under $250 US, reserve now for about $50 US (http://sklep.gerlach.org.pl/index.php?route=product/category&path=81)!

Lastly, Canadian brand Helgray is about to launch their Kickstarter project for the Silverstone chronograph, which uses the same Seiko movement as the G Gerlach watch. Again 4 color combinations, target price is under $300, but the early Kickstarter backers will get some significant discounts. I figured I'd spend a few bucks on a newer one.

But I gotta say that I highly doubt it's real.
Long story short - my brother was touring Asia for three weeks and coincidently ran into a friend of mine who knows I'm into timepieces. He took this off his wrist and told my brother it's a gift for me.
That being said - my buddy is pretty well off - but again - I doubt he'll give over a $5K watch

My collection has been dormant for a little while now. I'm also a member of WUS and was very active a few years back. Built up a nice little collection and was ok even with a car payment. Then came the mortgage and now a baby; and it's completely come to a stop. I'm now so lazy and don't even bother wearing them most days which is a shame. But a natural hoarder I'd never sell either. Lol.
So many boutique brands that build nice quality pieces. I've got two Stowas which I think are great value and also prices have appreciated since I've acquired them which is a nice surprise. But with our dollar the way it is. I don't see myself buying anything soon. I got a news letter for a new blue dial Sinn 103. I'm in love.

This afternoon, I checked out the recently released TAG Heuer Connect smart watch at a Birks...way too big for my wrist...46mm. With the CDN in the tank, I thought it would have been close to $2000, but to my surprise it was $1650. They only had the red band, was told that the black band was on back order by about 2 to 3 weeks.

I'm not quite on board with smart watches yet. I consider a watch an accessory, a part of one's identity. Then again, I'm old fashioned in this regard.

Recently jumped to the world of smart watches and got the Asus Zenwatch 2 for the past few months now.
Overall, functionality, quality and value for the watch is really good. The battery life also lasts for 1.5 days with full use of the watch (step counter, using it for phone calls, changing music tracks). I really like the customization of smart watches and that you can change the face anytime and it doesn't break the bank unlike other smart watches.

I run the Fossil QFounder watch. Looks pretty good, and isn't overly complicated. Does notifications and step counts and the Google voice stuff works pretty good (talking to your watch, which I use when driving to trigger things on the phone hands free).
Overall great little smart watch if you're not looking to invest in stupid money.
As with all smart watches, gotta charge daily which is somewhat annoying but I just charge when I get to my desk in the AM.

Thanks SirWanker. It is probably right because I dont charge it properly as it barely comes out. I have since left it on the kitchen table where it gets decent amount of lighting and it is working fine since this weekend

It is probably because yours was properly changed. I got mine recently and it went into my watch box right away without charging it hence it doesnt last because it was never properly fully charged

As for keeping time, mine runs a little fast and needs correcting once in a while.

Awesome, thanks for the reply! The versatility as far as straps go is a big draw for me. I've also been very happy with my current Seiko. As far as time corrections go, doesn't sound like I need to be too concerned. Thanks for the input!
*edit* Any experience with/preference between Seiko's automatics vs solar?

07-26-2017, 01:58 PM
No experience with Seiko's solar technology but if it is similar to Casio's, make sure the watch is stored in a well lit location where the battery can recharge, especially if you do not wear the watch for an extended time period. Otherwise the battery will drain and you have a paperweight. Mind you, if you know when it will be worn again, just allow the watch to recharge prior to the date ( with time and date adjustment obviously).
With automatics, just shake a couple of times, adjust the time and date and you're good to go.
