View Full Version : Days You Can't Seem to Get Anything Right

So... I had an interesting and frustrating day. Started well but had a string of misfortune which dragged it down.

Decided I'd put the Rally Armours on today... But the car was filthy, and I took it too a spray wash. Came out nice, but on the last rinse the water jet caught one of the wipers, it fell at an awkward angle and broke. Guh.

Went off to Canadian Tire and got some new ones for winter, and headed off to campus to install the mudflaps. There's a heated underground garage which makes doing this kind of work in the winter easy enough. I was working there for a while when STeeLy showed up to work on his car too, which was pretty cool. But I digress.

After getting the front flaps on, I realized that part of the fender liner was missing from my rear left wheel... Probably the first owners, but now I need to buy a new one. Sigh.

Then on the fourth flap, I was tightening the locknuts with a socket wrench... And the socket got stuck on the bolt. Took a good 20 minutes to get it off, with me writhing on the floor trying to reach around the bumper to work with it. The wheel was off though, which made that part easy, but...

After finally getting the last flap on, I decided to adjust the angle of the front flaps; so I decided to crank the wheels to make access easier. Got in the car, started the engine, went to crank the wheel and thought:

"Gee, I don't want to scrub my tires too badly, I'll just roll forward a foot or two as I crank."

... Which would have been fine except that, being tired and not paying attention, I had neglected to remount the rear right tire. And that's how I drove off my jack. :bang

Wish I could say I was making this story up... but STeeLy was there and can confirm it, lol. Was a damn good thing he was there though, as my jack got stuck underneath and we had to use his to get my car back up and the wheel on.

Thankfully, there appears to have been no damage; it landed squarely on the base of the suspension. No brake contact, and no bending or damage anywhere else. Alignment seems to be perfectly fine as well, and no odd noises either.

Still, it pisses me off that I did something so stupid and avoidable.

Anyone else have that kind of day, where it seems like you can't get anything right? :(

My brother in law had an azera a couple years ago. It was thanksgiving day and we were all at the inlaws for dinner, he got a flat on the drive over. After supper myself and my father in law went out to change it for him(he is not very mechanically inclined). he moved the car within the driveway to a better posisition(the driveway has a slight incline) We used his jack that came with the car, we have the car jacked up, (it was the front passenger side) and my bro -in-law leaned on the car, and the frigging thing starts moving. We had assumed that he knew enough to slap on the E-Brake, but he didn't. The car rolled forward, off the jack, almost took off my foot, and my father-in-law had to jump out of the way.

Needless to say, there may have been a few choice expletives used over the course of trying to get the car back up with a crappy jack.

Fuyuzora there started the car and I thought he was leaving... and me kinda working on my car and not really paying attention, and I heard a crash sound and was like... WTF?!

Looked over and then to the back wall and his tire was leaning on the wall and it dawned on me that a tire wasn't on and most likely landed on the suspension...

There's some not as bad as you, but TWICE I've seen someone put the wheels on the car, hand tighten (no tools) and completely forgot to torque them. Luckily, they realized it soon enough.

Thank goodness noone was injured. If the car fell on someones foot/leg or something, it would have been much worse.

Thanks for the replies and anecdotes, everyone.

+1: In retrospect, I thank my lucky stars that (A) nobody was injured, and (B) nothing seems to have been damaged. While I remain appalled at my mistake, I'm grateful that it was mostly harmless in the end, given that it had the potential to be much, much worse.

It reminded me of the fact that no matter how many times you go through an action, when it comes to cars you really can't afford to have a slip of conscience or neglect, as it can have dire consequences. Hopefully my little story might serve as a reminder to some of you all as well, lest it happen again to someone else...

+100000. I get pissed when people talk to me while changing my wheels over from summers to winters or vice versa.

Glad to hear the car is fine with no damage though, consider it a wake up call :)
