Hello there guys. I'm planning a small little trip with my gf for new years to Montreal. To be honest with you, i've never been there before and i know nothing there. I know a few of you guys have been there or have even lived there before. So i just want to get some input as to what i can do for 2-3 days there. Were planning to leave on Friday and come back possibly Sunday.

Some info

- My gf and i aren't into clubbing
- We don't really drink so bars is not our thing
- We can be really easily bored, except when were shopping :chuckle

Questions

- What opens on New Years.
- how long is usually the drive
- are things expensive there? ie.. food?

Thanks for everyones input.

Just got back from Montreal today. Drive takes about 5 - 5:30. Prices are pretty much what you see in ON from what I saw.

Main attractions I found notable was Notre Dame and Old Montreal... You can also try Duck in a Can (not sure if they have this in Toronto).

Good food is cheaper than Toronto From Scarborough to NDG the drive tapes me pretty much bang on 5 hours with the cruise control set at 120kmh and no traffic to deal with. 525 km from my apartment to my girlfriend's. I'm actually probably heading home later today. This restaurant (http://www.firegrill.com/) is a must for a first time visit, IMO. I've been there only twice but they have the best tasting steaks I have ever eaten and at a reasonable price, too. Look up the location address, but it is basically right outside of the metro station called Peel. I would advise parking at your hotel and taking the metro, as there is severely limited parking downtown. Metro is the same cost as TTC last time I checked, $2.75 a ticket.

Oh, also, Sainte Catherine st is similar to our queen st if you like shopping, just much better atmosphere and much more welcoming structure appeal. I hope that makes sense.

We flew to Montreal, and did an extensive road trip within the Eastern Townships, over to Quebec City.
Uncertain if you intend to drive around, but we found the GPS an invaluable tool, especially when it came to language issues/signs.
Theres a casino in Montreal as well, if thats your thing.

yes - Chez Paree is great! and it's clean(er) than the other rat-hole clubs

You should go to Bocadillo's (Venezuelen Burger shop) on St.Laurent and Club Med (a more upscale dining/club experience).
Also Reubens for smoked meat sandwiches and you have to try the Italienne Poutine. (it's a franchise scattered all around Montreal)
Don't forget St. Huberts Rotisserie Chicken ...mmmmmmmm

St Catherines is a great strip for shopping.

Oh - it's fricken cold in QC - way colder and windy than in TO so bring your gloves, scarves, toques....
I wouldnt take my car there if you plan on staying in the downtown core. Streets are old, narrow, and bumpy.

Biodome.

EVERYONE loves the Biodome... Also really nice to walk through the rainforest section in the middle of winter. :)

Awesome information so far guys. Much better then having me looking at the tourism internet site of Montreal. I'll definitely check out the st cathrines so we can do some shopping. The poutine will be a good choice since thats also one of my favorites.

As for strip clubs. ummmmmm i think i'll have to pass on that since i still want to enjoy my driving trip back to toronto, otherwise i'll have to shut my ears up for 5 hours.

How can you guys forget Schwartz's??

Don't forget there's a Chinatown you can visit too. Nothing too fancy, but it's decently sized.

There's an Eaton Centre along St. Catherine's as well.

Oh, and if you're planning on taking the Si/STI there, get ready to be gouged even harder on gas. MTL gas is about $0.10/L more.

Wait, you're asian... There's the nice casino near Parc Jean Drapeau :chuckle

^^ Thanks for the heads up. I wasn't planning to take the STI there cuz i heard lots of horror stories of cars getting vandalize or stolen there. And my sti is still sleeping. I'm probably either going to take the SI or my pops TL there for comfort.

I guess China town can be a fun place. Hopefully is not as bad as the one we have here. I hate driving on spadina and queen. People just don't seem to know how to read lights. Always have the urge to just run them all over.

Try out Au Pied de Cochon - very good food and reasonably priced for what you get!

You say "eeew" to strip joints now, but if you go as a group with both guys and girls, it's pretty fun :)
