View Full Version : How to make my exhaust quieter inside the car?

This might sound silly - I really am looking to keep my exhaust but I want to make it quieter inside the car!
The wife is tired of the sound.
Any ideas for not a lot of money?
Do you know of anyone I can talk to who can help or have had it done?
I have the MAZDASPEED OEM exhaust installed on my 2008.5 Mazda 3 Sport GT Hatch.
It has a wicked growl to it but it gets loud and droney inside the car.
I would appreciate any help or feedback.
I am looking at replacing the muffler but I want to keep the wide tip I have.
HELP!!! PLEASE!!!

Larger muffler. I'm running a 16x4x9 straight through design + vibrant ultra quiet resonator. Muffler alone will run you about $90 - $125, depending on where you get it, and if it's stainless, etc. Installation is another story. Call around for quotes.

Where did you get yours? And what model vehicle do you have?

if you want to keep the hole system another option is to sound deaden the entire floor of the trunk and car. Your have to remove the interior and carpet then lay the stuff down. some ppl have done it. can be a couple hundred tho.
i have a sedan and i sound deadened the entire trunk for the sound system and it actually help with quieting the interior from the exhaust a little as well. and no it didnt mean i was drowning it out with music lol.

This is a tough one. I have to agree Zakman, one of the best ways to remove the seats and interior carpet and insulate with a product like dynomat.
The only thing you could try is spraying the underside with a rubberized rocker guard or lining it with a spray in bedliner type material. If you have the Hatchback it could be more difficult just because of the open cabin. The sedan would be easier at trying to achieve what you want.

ya i had also gotten the life time warrenty rust proofing stuff which is a rush proof, sound deadening/insulator, and etc. its like an all in one product. its fantastic to tell you the truth. its a rubbery material so it doesnt really ever come off unless u try hard... not that you would want to take it off.

i have the same issue. i just got a CS CBE for my '10 sedan and another above/under 2k rpm.. it sounds wicked.. but just right at that 2k mark.. my interior is rumbling and vibrating and droning like 2012 is about to happen.. T_T
i want to get a resonator instead of 'dynamating' the car.. but cant really decide on what resonator to get for it.. anyone out there suggest a good resonator for my CS CBE?

Today i went to JPG Exhaust on the recommendation of Andrew @ QEW Mazda. I had George take a look at my car.
He is recommending adding a muffler (The OEM MazdaSpeed 3 exhaust has 3 resonators and no exhaust).
He is going to remove the middle res and replace it with a stainless steel resonator/muffler and take the 2 1/4" pipe down to a 2" pipe.
This way I can keep my exhaust tip and back end.
I am heading over there tomorrow at 4 pm to get it done.
If anyone wants to meet me there to take a look at what is being done, you are more than welcome.
You can call my cell if you want to meet up 416-891-8385 (James).
JPG Exhaust is located at 287 Speers Road in Oakville. Speers and Dorval.
I will let you all know how it works out.

Take a video before and after. Also, have you looked into adding the Vibrant Ultra quiet resonator?

I suppose it would be nice to have my speed 3 a bit more quiet without losing any power.. :P sure it sounds nice accelerating but I'd love to be able to hear the music clearly as well on the highway :P
I think one of the biggest reason why so many people wants to upgrade their sub on the speed 3 is cause they can't hear it well over the drone of the exhaust.

That's funny!
But they told me I wouldn't lose much at all. Maybe 1 to 2 hp max.
Hope it gets much quieter inside the car.
I love the sound outside but I am sure that will lessen as well.

Good point to both of you.
She was the one who told me we should get a wicked exhaust.
So I did.
a year or so later, she complains it drones too much.
Oh well.
Hope it's much better after today.

Phil - I think Mine was much louder in the car. You only did your muffler I believe. My whole exhaust system was replaced.
Andrew - Race? I would still beat your crappy S2000 with... Phil's car!
LOL!
Great job at JPG Exhaust. I learned a lot from them.
Awesome to deal with there.
Thanks for recommending them Andrew.

Dave's solutions:
1)Turn Stereo up
2)Remove wife from car
3)Try combining 1 and 2
4)Did you try 1 2 & 3? If so consider resonator.

Would putting dynamat in the car make the exhaust quieter on the interior and keep the same roar of the exhaust outside.
Might be cheaper way and the wifey is happy. But of course getting all that cool stuff is better.

Ya dynamatt would make it quieter inside and not out. So you are good until you roll down the windows...

I usually keep my windows down anyway to use A/C and heater. I don't mind losing 2-4 hp for heat or A/C lol.

The dynamat would tone it down a little inside the car but the vibration and droning would still be bad.
This is a badass exhaust!
Now that I have removed 2 resonators and replaced them with 2 resonators/mufflers, the vibration and droning inside is next to nothing and it still sounds pretty good outside.

I already changed it. So it doesn't sound as loud anymore.
I still have the 2 resonators for sale. I am asking $100.00 for both.
Anyone interested, let me know.
I have had one pm about it so far but no firm deal yet.

you can rustproof your car with the black tar. It works as a soundproof to.

Now it sounds good in the car. Less vibration and easier to hear the tunes!
It still sounds pretty throaty without the whine out the back.
I am very pleased.
I don't think the video will do it justice. You gotta check it out in person.

Anyone know who does the rubberized undercoating, for a reasonable price?

If you have a corksport cat bak system, getting the racepipe makes the in car quieter, but outside louder at high rpms. Just recently did this for more power and was pleasantly surprised on sound and vibration inside car - smooth. I think a little noise is a small price to pay for more tq/hp.

really? how much more quieter does it make? i might consider that then.. cause its annoying the crap out of all my passengers lol but the outside sounds really good.. tho
