I really like the look of the RX-8 R3 rims but I do not want to go up to 19"s.
Can anyone recommend a place where I can get my stock 18's powder coated to look exactly the same colour as the RX-8 R3 ones?
I'm a little worried about durability of powder coated rims. Will they chip/flake easily?

There are many places around the GTA that offer powdercoating services. The quality of the work will vary from shop to shop and the kind of finish you order may contribute to the durability (clearcoat).
That said, I've used Quy in the past and his service and quality is top notch.

Quy's....powder coat color 210. Its the closest match for the R3 color (I have R3 center caps). I have that color on my rx-8 rims.
Cheers!
Edit: I'm actually supposed to see Quy about getting a rim redone so send me a pm and I can meet you there if you plan on making the trip to him.

If your looking for powdercoating, Quy is the man. Did the work on my speed3 rims January of last year and still look mint. No chips or scratches!

If he doesnt' have the color you want, bring in a sample of what it is your looking for and he'll work at getting it for you.
Powdercoated rims are very durable. Not easily chipped. I've gone through areas with pretty broken up roads and debris, still not one chip or blemish.

I was planning on waiting until winter was nearly over as I already have the rim separated. I just need to stop being lazy and call him lol. The color 210 was on a sample piece he had on the wall.
In terms of chipping, no. My one rim that needs refinishing is due to curb rash. Otherwise my other 3 rims are in mint condition. No scratches, nicks, chips etc.
let me know when you plan on going.
Edit: here are the pics of my rx-8's in that color. I purchased R3 center caps and you cant even tell the difference...

I have a small boo boo that is being repaired by Quy this month. Let's just say, the powder coat took all of the brunt and is the only thing flaking. Powdercoating is much more durable than paint.
Quy is still off on Vacation so try him after next week.

All Mine. Workmanship is very good and they have sample rims in their offices.
No clear as it would change the look of the finish. Then again I did not ask.
A rock will go right through the clear to paint to metal like on hood of you car but powder more durable and for the price in couple years can afford to have it redone and change colour!
I was looking for a reasonable price with a good job as no to spend money on tires!
You want clear give them a call and ask. Prob not much more per rim.

Thank you very much! For all those that hated on metal Coaters this guy just proved what I was saying.
Quy's vert good but IMO expensive. If u wanna pay more for it go for it. It will still chip. Btw been over a year with my rims and no chips or anything. Looks brand new!!
I'm also going to be getting my 2010 speed rims done by Quy this winter...still deciding between the R3 gun metal or a super high gloss wet black. As for centre's I was thnking about these, OEM mazdaspeed. Just need to know if they will fit and if Flip can bring them in for me.

If I recall, it'll take 3 to 12 days, depending on how busy they are and how much work needs to be done. Most of these places don't do rims exclusively, they do industrial work, and this on the side!

Point: you get what you paid for...whether you pay more or less, it's a personal choice...however, something of a purely cosmetic nature should NOT be judged on COST alone...if you do, then nothing beats ratlle can...when work is done by hand, workmanship trumps ALL.

lets not turn this into another powder coat debate.
VertigoM, purchase a set of R3 center caps first and then compare the different PC's samples to best replicate the R3 rim color. Your timeline is around March, so you have plenty of time to drive around and see every powder coaters shop for samples.
good luck!

Generaly to re powdercoat, the material is prepped by sandblasting the media back to bare metal for proper adhesion. Sometimes chemical stripping is used.
Thinking of changing your current setup?

How many times can a set of rims be powder coated?
when I did my research, it had nothing to do with the number of times the metal can be blasted and coated. of course, an aggressive blast job will wear down some metal, but I doubt anyone will include your rims in a batch of say rusted parts off a tank to be blasted together.
the issue with repeated powder coating comes from the heat treatment. aluminum alloys like most rims will develop stress as the (I'm not trying to sound smart here, just what I've read) metallic crystalline structure will begin to deform and rearrange themselves in a weaker way. this temp. however, is 475*+ at over 30min exposure. the processes that I have worked with, and this is why knowing the actual process each coater uses is important, is no more than 10 - 15min @ a time between coats @ ~400* as opposed to the quicker and harsher high temps.
in this way, you can say that you can coat and recoat as many times as you like as long as you do not over-cook, over-heat or over blast the wheel.

With a clearcoat you'll damage the finish regardless.. depending how hard you hit you may not hit he paint but you'll nick or crack the clear... yes it will still look better than hitting the paint area.. but hey.. i got sways painted by Quy and with a vise grip I managed to crack the paint.. so really.. i dont see much of a difference unless he didnt apply a clear on that..

he does not apply clearcoat on parts udner the car...he didn't understand why I wanted to coat my DP and manifold, until I showed him pics of it glowing. In his line of work, things unseen are usually not coated...so when we ask him to do under-car parts, he doesn't apply clear, unless it is something you had arranged with him to do or not.
If it cracked due to poor workmanship or coating defect, please take it back to him, not only for re-do as per warranty, but for him to know what went wrong.

I'll back that video up. The powdercoat is tough.
When I rubbed my MS6 powdercoated wheel this past summer, the powdercoat took most of the brunt. Lucky for me it was a simple re do of the powdercoat at Quy's with no damage to the wheel.
With that video, maybe we should plasticoat with clear on top of the powedercoat to simulate the sandwich bag. Maybe a new third coat option.:chuckle
