NO EMBLEM REMOVAL REQUIRED!!!

Just wanted to share this with ya... found this on the Lexus forum

Hi everyone. This is my first post here. I'm
not sure if this was covered here. I searched but didn't find it. If it was im sorry for the double post.

This is my first lexus and I'm digging it.

Problem: After searching long and hard, couldn't find any matte blackemblems to purchase for the IS350... The black pearl emblems are out of the budget so I decided to just do it myself. Like most folks I hate the idea of having to use fishing line or something else to uninstall emblems then reinstall with new 3M tape.

SO here goes.. shooting black emblems with PlastiDip!

Materials
1. Can of PlastiDip purchased from Home Depot
2. Small plastic pick/spackle thing.
3. Masking Tape
4. Newspaper
5. Patience
6. Rubbing Alcohol, Soap, water
7. Cotton Swabs
8. Clean Towels

http://www.creative-giant.com/cars/lexus/blackemblems-01.JPG

Steps

1. Clean around your emblems. Use soap and water if your car's real dirty. Then make sure you get down into the cracks. Dry it off and get back in there with some cotton swabs & alcohol. Again make sure the surface is dry before you even think about painting.

2. Mask off the area with some masking tape and newspaper in case of overspray.

3. Now you're ready to spray.. WHAT? NO SANDING? Right.. no sanding. Plasti Dip is a multi-purpose air dry, synthetic rubber coating that can be easily applied by spraying. Its been used on grills by BMW, Audi and many lexus owners too. Do a search and you'll see.

http://www.creative-giant.com/cars/lexus/blackemblems-02.JPG

4. Make sure you shake that can up and do a test pass on some newspaper so you see how much comes out of the nozzle. From there shoot a thin coat on your emblems.

http://www.creative-giant.com/cars/lexus/blackemblems-03.JPG

5. Wait a few minutes and make a darker pass

http://www.creative-giant.com/cars/lexus/blackemblems-04.JPG

6. Then give it 15 minutes or so then apply a second coat. I went and did a 3rd coat. I didn't want it to appear too thick

http://www.creative-giant.com/cars/lexus/blackemblems-05.JPG

7. I let it dry for about an hour before i decided to pull off my masking tape. Some folks say 30 minutes. The can said an hour

http://www.creative-giant.com/cars/lexus/blackemblems-06.JPG
8. Now peel off the masking tape.. You'll notice the rubber want to pull off with the tape, thats no problem, just don't go rubbing it too fast. Thats no fun. when the rubber breaks and u have to get into the little cracks of the emblems to pull it off

http://www.creative-giant.com/cars/lexus/blackemblems-07.JPG
http://www.creative-giant.com/cars/lexus/blackemblems-08.JPG
9. Now with your fingers, just begin peeling it back. The PlastiDip will peel off your paint no problem and it begins breaking around where the emblem adhere to the car.
http://www.creative-giant.com/cars/lexus/blackemblems-09.JPG
http://www.creative-giant.com/cars/lexus/blackemblems-10.JPG
http://www.creative-giant.com/cars/lexus/blackemblems-11.JPG
10. To get into the middle areas, just use a plastic pick or your finger nail (if you have access to small fingers?) and pick at it.. It'll just peel off like dry elmer's glue again.
http://www.creative-giant.com/cars/lexus/blackemblems-13.JPG

11. Enjoy your new emblems.

FAQ
How long does it last especially without any prep work like normal paint?
Again, its a synthetic rubber spray.. It requires no prep besides a clean surface to adhere to. The plastidip does last long, and if there is a blemish, peel that stuff off your emblems, mask and repeat.

Have you used it before? How do you know?
I've sprayed my BMW front grills and emblems and they've held up for a couple years without any chips. Car washes are fine too Also do a search, you'll find a lot of people using plastidip.

Remember, to each their own. This look isn't for everyone. I have matte black wheels so I decided to go this route on the car. Enjoy!

Enjoy!

Have fun =)

Thanks guys! I was going for the Speed3 look with the rear. Overall super easy. I did the back M a few times until I liked it the best, scary the first time but now I am doing everything I can. The rear bumper is highly recommended. The 07-09 (I believe?) rear hatch bumpers have the distinct line above the factory black insert. I taped off an inch past the line, once dry ran a small blade along the groove, and then peeled extra off. The reflectors required no cutting at all, simply start one edge and they came off super clean as well. I will likely shoot it again this week and take some pics of the process too. Everything so far is one quick too thick coat. Round two will be done with a few coats and more patience in waiting until peeling haha.

Shot of what was the Chrome "Jeep" lettering from my Father In-Laws 2010 JK Sahara.

I found this one to be easier as there is a bigger gap between the letters and the body which meant no continuation of the PlastiDip between the emblem and the body.

When doing the front emblems, how do you prevent it from spraying inside the emblem and even keeping the lip around the emblem not touched?

CoolColombian

The best way to do it is removing the front emblem, its held by clips.

When you guys did the "Mazda 3" emblem on the back, it you leave it on or take it off the car?? If you left it on, how did you remove the plastidip from inside the D and the A etc....

JaYson

make sure to spray the plastidip from all angles (above, below, left, right, straight on) and to remove it, use a tooth pick and a very small pair if tweezers, worked like a charm for me!!

VERY important to spray from all angles and get enough layers, i regrettably had to do mine twice, (all 4-5 layers, 20mins between coats) because i didnt have enough through layers the first time and or i rushed my picking, and i ended up pulling a bit off the letter, so..take your time, spray it throughly, and bring something to do while u wait

super easy to do, a little tape and a lot of time is all that you need for this to be successful.

I tried this today, and failed miserably. Going to peel it off and give it a try another time.

My problem was that every time I tried to peel the excess off around the edges, it would pull and stretch off the emblem. That made a mess of little hanging pieces that even when I tried to fix them it made it worse in some spots. I want to be able to trim it properly with a blade but I'm worried about scratching the paint.

Part of my problem may have been that I rushed it and didn't go slow enough. I also sprayed a little bit too close, maybe around 6-8 inches away and the can says 12-16" away. This caused a few blotches instead of an even coating, and may have made removing the excess even harder.

I already peeled off the rear emblem because I couldn't remove the middle cleanly without pulling it off the "M".

I know that the blotches were caused by improper spraying and that I will take more care next time, but any more advice for taking off the excess around the lettering without pulling off the plastidip around the letters and emblems?

From the looks of it you're over spraying on one particular spot. when you spray try to start spraying outside the emblem them move across the emblem, only stoping once you've PASSED the emblem. yes you waste some plastidip but its worth it for the final product.

when you spray your first coat, just spay very very lightly, move quickly over so you just see a light sprinkling, let that dry for about 7mins, then you'll move into you're next coat which is slightly thicker
let dry for another 10mins, then move into a slightly thicker coat again just passing over back and forth on and off, starting before and after the emblem. let dry 20mins for each coat. i did about 4-5 coats.

also, make sure you clean the emblems very thoroughly especially the edges where the emblem meets the body.

also make sure you're spraying literally from all angles, spray square to the body, then if you could imagin 45degree angles to the left, right, downwards, and upwards that should be one coat for each angle, keep in mind that's about 5 passes atleast, so you want to move relatively quickly so you dont blotch up the emblem, if it looks like its getting too wet, just stop spraying and let it dry

In addition to jaysons post, make sure your shaking the can too, it tends to goober out bigger blobs or just plain inconsistent otherwise. or if your uncoordinated like me you'll spray while your fingers covering half the nozzle.

I tried doing mine 2 days ago and i screwed up...+1 on Jayson & mitchel, spray lots of coats, better to put on more coats than to re-do it over and over again.
I gotta re-do mine this weekend... :(

It's definitely harder than it looks. I was trying to go back and forth over the emblem but because I sprayed too close, or maybe I didnt shake the can enough, it globed up in some spots.

I'll try cleaning the emblems better as well, maybe it was peeling off because I didn't use rubbing alcohol.

I did my front and back decals with Plastidip the other night.

The hardest part is getting the Plastidip from between the letters on Mazda out. I did a great job scratching my paint in one spot through the clear coat, but I see it as a battle scar. Now I need to get an Axela badge and Plastidip that too.

shake and spray and like jayson said start a bit off the emblems.. cuz if you spray direct it will probably overspray on that spot

when picking off the bits inside the emblem out, use a tooth pic and just pick at it repeatedly on one spot. USE A TOOTHPICK or something plastic...like a plastic toothpick. be patient. i only used the tweezers once a bit of the plastidip is sticking up

Sorry for reviving and old thread... but for anyone looking to pick up plasti dip, i went to 5 store this week to track it down.

Canadian Tire and Home Depot do not carry it (even though the home depot site showed it did). I was told only Home Hardware carries it. With that being said i went to 3 Home Hardwares this morning... 2 of the 3 only carried black or black and white but luckily the third one carried red (the one i was looking for).

Anyways, for anyone looking for plasti dip (besides black or white), the Home Hardware in Oakville (511 Maplegrove Drive, Unit 7) carries it.
