View Full Version : Which rim should I run in the summer?

So after talking with friends, what rims I was going to run in the summer have come into question. As such, here's a poll. Which of these should I run in the summer?

As you can probably tell, the car is no longer lowered and there is no plans to re-lower it. This was just after lowering it off the jack so it would probably settle a bit more but not a lot from that picture. So which do people think I should run un-lowered?

Poll open for 7 days (if I set it right).

Rim A (Katana 17" rims)

Rim B (Mazda RX-8 18" rims)

As much as I adore the RX-8 rims, I have to go with the Katanas, hence my vote. The Katanas look good with the normal or standard clearance.

Yeah. Hence my flip-flopping. At first I thought 17" aftermarket wouldn't look too great un-lowered. Then I tested this the other day and I've been second guessing myself. Asked my friends and so far it's 8 - 1 in favor of the Katana. Looking like that's what it's going to go but still going to wait a few days just to be sure.

Not a fan of the RPF1. I like the weight but the spokes are too small for me. I like the spokes going to the edge. If I was going to get an Enkei rim, it would be the PF01. Not that I could afford it anyways.

Well, if I do keep the Katana rims (looking more likely at this point) I would sell the RX-8's.

You have good taste! The PF01's are amazing looking rims, personally love it in black.

As for choosing between the two, I think the Katana's look better here. Just tossing an idea out there, you could powdercoat your rx-8 rims another colour and that would look pretty nice (kinda like hit26k's but whatever colour you like)

Was tempted to powder coat but I like the regular colour. The issue for me is I don't like rims that are too dark on a black car. I like being able to see the rims.

Katana looks sexy.
RX-8, while attractive, makes the car look too stock.
And how in the hell is your car THAT clean this time of year, anyhow? :)

I filled up my car on Friday on my way home from work, got a car wash at the same time and didn't drive it over the weekend. So that was Saturday mid day when I was rotating my tires. Which was still pretty cold even with my garage closed...

You should have seen how bad it was before the car wash!

Katanas. Did you buy the Katanas that was in classifieds?

No, I was trying to sell them after I got the RX-8's. But people convinced me to run them instead of the RX-8's. So when I was doing my tire rotation over the weekend, I quickly put 1 rim of each set on my car and took a picture to see which looked best. Since majority seem to say Katana, I'm likely going with those and will eventually put the RX-8's for sale instead.

What is the sidewall height on both?

The Katana's look like they have a taller sidewall which makes them look better at stock height.

Not 100% sure on the RX-8's but the Katana have 205/50/17 tires. I think the RX-8's have the same size overall. So basically stock size so no speedo change or very minimal.

Katana's FTW, RX-8 are way too over done. But I think the 18" will look better since you're not planning to lower again.

I'm willing to bet the RX-8s have 45s then. I would go with the Katan's 18s + 45s + stock height = roller skate look

That's meant to be a pause between "I would go with the Katana's" and "18s + 45s + stock height = roller skate look" right? Cause the Katana's are 17s.

If you were going to lower it again, then I'd say the RX8's would look better. Since you're not, the Katana's look better with the stock ride height and gap. So, Katana's get my vote.

Ya. Basically at stock height the Katana's look better.

i voted for the aftermarket rims. OEM rims always look clean, but I find alot of OEM rims too boring for my taste.

(unless they are Rays :P )

No, not yet. Don't get a lot of time after work before it gets dark so my plan is to do that this weekend sometime. This is mostly due to the pictures though.

Fair enough. Everyone has their own style or what they like. If I'm honest, I'd rather have a different set of rims but they would have cost a lot more money that I wasn't willing to spend at the time. Specially since I have no more plans to lower it. Guess I should have put an option up there saying "None of the above" or something.

Thanks for the input though.
