View Full Version : to plasti-dip or not to plasti-dip.

i currently am running the stock 16"s on my 05 hatch and i want to plasti-dip my rims to black for this summer while i save up for a nice set of rims. the problem is i dont have any spare set to put on while doing this, no tools to take off the rims at home, and no access to a lift that will let me keep my car up their while i spray the rims. powder coating is an option, but im thinking a waste of money considering they will be used for winters anyways and plasti-dip is reversible. any ideas? if anyone has tools/lift/jack and is willing to help a brotha out, i could come to you and lunch will be on me:chuckle

You don't need to take the tires off to plasti-dip, just use cue cards and stick them in where the rubber meets the rim. You could always do it over the course of a week, one rim at a time. Your car will look a little weird until they are all finished, but hey, it's winter, who cares? :)

Check out the other plastidip thread, there's a bunch of pics in there of what people did.

the thing is the plasti dip would go through the rim to the rotors and calipers wouldnt it? and that wouldnt be good.

Oh lol, well yeah, you have to take the wheel off the car first lol. Get a block of wood, jack up your car and then let it rest on the wood (instead of the scissor jack) while the plastidip is drying. Just make sure to put blocks of something behind the back wheels so the car doesn't roll back and off the wood block or scissor jack.
Ask Thanu how long his wheels took to dry.

or you can do one wheel at a time, you car comes with the tools to lift and take on and off the rims. look in your truck compartments. but that will take alot more time. you should do it, plasti dip has a nice finnish to it as well.

I plasti-dipped my 16's for the same reasons you're considering it, and I'm glad I did. If you can borrow a set of jack stands, you can do both wheels on each side at a time. I did my driver's side on one weekend, didn't have time to get to the others until the next weekend lol.

Home Hardware carries it, but they dont normally stock a lot of them at one time. You may be lucky and find a HH with 3-4 cans though. Or you can get it from Nextmod.

WOW, that's pretty decent looking! How long does that stuff stay on? Maybe I should do it to my stock OEM 17's as a back up to the DAI's I want to buy for summer. What do you think the cost would be? (like how many cans would i need)

^ Not sure, but you can peel it off at anytime. Over time stones and stuff will/may "chip" away at it, but just spray over the chip and you're good to go.

I think thanu said he used one can per wheel or something? Also depends on how much you want to use. How many layers you want, etc.

this is something thats really hard to mess up - as long as the rims are off the car.

You'll feel really silly how easy it is. Somebody once mentioned "watch your mom/GF fix her hair with hairspray - now picture her head is an 18" Rim"
that's all there is to it

Basically mask around the rim by masking tape& newspaper or use a deck of cards and tuck them in between the edge of the rim and the tire. then spray.

the stuff peels off anyway - so its very forgiving

Definitely plasti dip your rims! Depending on your car colour, it might be the best mod you can do during winter! I did my rims over the winter break in the states. Cost me $18 for 3 cans (only in Home Depot, US) and took about 12 hours including drying time. So worth!

I would definitely powdercoat or at the very least use rim paint instead of plasti-dip. It looks pretty good in pictures, but it's not something you can show off.
Check out ST3ALTH's close up shot of his rim... top left lug. With Plasti-dip, it tends to just tear off like that when you tighten your lugs. Again, for winter it's no big deal but if they're your summer rims, drop the $250 for a powdercoat.

how can a colour look like matte? that makes no sense, matte is a finnish not a colour. and your finnish on your carbon grey is the exact same finnish on stealths black mica, so its pretty much going to look the same lol.

LMAO, Yeah i did not understand that either. Oh well. All everyone is saying is..... Plasti dip is normally just for winter rims to keep them protected or if you wanna change the color up a bit. But if your looking at doing your summer setup i say spend the extra cash and do it right. Get them powder coated or painted properly.

$250 for powder coating? that's the going rate on 4 rims? Can someone clarify this. If that's the case then maybe I should just do that to my OEM 17's instead of plasti-dip! Would def last lnger and look better.

Cool, thanks for the heads up...I think the clear coat would be good though as an added layer of protection and enhancement no?

So 2 layers and clear seemed to be the norm from what I remember when I was asking last year...or is it 3 coats and 1 clear???

I'm assuming pretty good except if you had a chip in the finish or something cause then I could see the pressure washer maybe peeling it off even more (if you held the washer too close).....better wait for one of the experts to answer though.

It all depends on the shop. Some do clear coats, some don't.

Are you referring to plasti-dip or powder coating? My winters are powder coated and no problems going through the touchless. A few members do coin-ops, not sure if their rims are plast-dipped though.

Ok.. I've read SO MUCH about plastidipping rims, but I can't seem to get a straight answer on Clearcoating them.

If you plastidip your rims, and then clearcoat them, is it still removable, or does the Clear Coat harden the whole finish and make peeling it impossible?

Anyone who has done this, I would really appreciate your feedback.

Also, which clearcoat would you recommend for rims, Duplicolor or Rustoleum? or others?

Thanks,

Yes, ive done clear coat after plasti dipping my rims, but i find that it didnt turn out evenly as i thought, some were more glossy than others, it wasnt really pleasing to the eye either so i re-did it with plastidip on top of the clear coat. Plasti dip is meant to stay matte but if u want to clear coat, that's your choice to do it or not. I used Duplicolour.

I DO want to clear coat, as I think it will protect the finish a lot better, and I want a glossy finish, but can it still be peeled off after? And I think for it to look even, has a lot to do with how you apply it.

dont clear coat plastidip. the product wasnt meant to go hand in hand with clear coat.
you wont achieve a perfect glossy finish with plastidip because as Kwokalobster mentioned it wont come out even on the shine.
i ran out of funds and tried out plastidip on my rx8 rims. it looks good the way it is. (but thats just my opinion)
if you want the glossy finish and all, go with the whole process of painting your rims (sand/prep/prime/paint/clear-coat)
im only trying this for one summer because im dirt cheap lol

dont clear coat plastidip. the product wasnt meant to go hand in hand with clear coat.
you wont achieve a perfect glossy finish with plastidip because as Kwokalobster mentioned it wont come out even on the shine.
i ran out of funds and tried out plastidip on my rx8 rims. it looks good the way it is. (but thats just my opinion)
if you want the glossy finish and all, go with the whole process of painting your rims (sand/prep/prime/paint/clear-coat)
im only trying this for one summer because im dirt cheap lolWelcome to budget mods lol

LOL exactly.
cant wait to mount the rims on the car.. if they start to peel.. then hey, i can either put run another coat on them.. or just peal the whole damn thing off.
