Basics - not looking to add it. 1)Needs to be moderated, and the requires huge time investment 2)Want to keep discussion on the forum.

(In support of sfw) Don't forget, if you have a smart phone, you can get tapatalk and it makes browsing the forums really easy.
(In support of OP) Moderation would be easy, No time investment, Sometimes I have a question that doesn't really need a whole topic.

i agree with the whole live chat room being to much but what about a chat system like facebook? were its just from person to person... for friends and ppl on line.

most of us have facebook for that lol... but it would be cool if someone made a chat room that was not TM3 but that everyone on TM3 knew about get my drift? lol

We rock this on VBulletin over on 6crew. Yes, it does get out-of-hand sometimes but its benefits far outweigh the drawbacks. Members LOVE the fact that they can get live help at almost any hour of the day.

Set up a freenode IRC room and I'll join. I'm on IRC most of the time anyways. http://freenode.net/

Tell you what, I'll set up an IRC room on my friends server so that we have full control over everything, I'll do it asap, probably thursday morning. It doesn't have to be tm3 sponsored, but it will be there. All people will be given appropriate ranks up joining.
Admins = 9999
Moderators = 10
Members = 3
Non Members = 0
Ofc, Admins can alter ranks for members.

Clearly the members are all for it but the moderators/admins are against it. Why - I haven't a clue. It will increase site traffic (trust me...members will just sit on the boards all day chatting) and assuming your domain bandwidth can handle it, it shouldn't cost you guys a penny.
I'd say test it to for a month and see how it goes.

While the chat boxes are nice, I see a few people here use IRC, so as I said before, I set up a channel on my friends server where we won't be bugged.
And excellent client to view IRC in is mIRC for windows users.
If you do not wish to download a client, you can use mibbit.com (http://www.mibbit.com)
here's how to set it up:
http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/3943/ircl.png
Of course you must use your own nickname, and you will have to register with the server the first time.
Steps to register:
1. Click "Server" and type: irc.swiftirc.net in the server field
2. If you have a registered Nickname click Auth for automatic authentication, and click connect. If not, skip to step 3.
3. Connect with no password in the password field and your nickname in the nickname field.
4. Wait to connect and when connected type: /ns register password password your@e-mail.com your@e-mail.com
(Yes double password, double email)
5. You are now registered.
To authenticate yourself manually, aka log in, type /ns id password once connected to the server.
Please note, registering is not required to talk, but required to reserve your nickname for yourself, and if any access is to be given to your nick name.
For those with irc
/server -m irc.swiftirc.net -j #tm3

So far I've seen zmz3 and Hyperion. Then just random people with unknown names. I leave IRC open all the time. If we get enough people on, it'll be more interesting.

only way it would work is if everyone knew about it. and not everyone reads the post so it makes it hard lol

edit for fail at engrish =(
when ever i go on i always see hyperion, and a user named x, which i'm going to assume is xtothel? aside from that seems pretty empty right now

no no, usernamed X is Hyperion's bot, I am who I appear to be.
Hyperion

X is a service bot provided by the network.
I am pretty much always connected, but not always on.
Saying my name will tell you how long i've been (in)active for, but will also hilight me and get my attention.
So people have said they are getting banned upon joining, i'm looking into that. If the mibbit doesn't work you can use one of these two links;
Qwebirc (http://swiftirc.net/index.php?page=chat&client=qwebirc) Inbrowser irc, does not use java.
Pjirc (http://swiftirc.net/index.php?page=chat&client=java) Inbrowser irc, uses java.
Don't forget you can download an individual client called mIRC to chat so that you don't have to keep a webpage open here. (http://www.mirc.com/get.html) Feel free to ask me how to set it up.
Basic set up information.
Nickname: Your own
Alternative: Slight variation of previous
Name: Optional
E-mail: Optional
Server
You can add your own server (and you will have to) click
Servers -> add ->
Description: Swiftirc
IRC Server: irc.swiftirc.net
Ports: 6667 (already filled in)
Group: Leave empty
Password: Leave empty
-> Press add
-> Hilight just made server, and press select
Basic, onetime setup, complete.
To connect, if it hasn't, press the lightning bolt.
About the favourites dialouge that pops up, at the bottom deselect "pop up favourites on join"
To join the TM3 channel type: /join #tm3
Tada. Complicated? It's not really.
Press ok, it should connect, if it do

MAC USERS
HERE IS HOW YOU SET IT UP IN ADIUM:
Since I use Adium for MSN, and I'm sure many others do too. I just hooked up the IRC feature to join #TM3.
1. Get Adium http://adium.im/
2. File >> Add Account >> IRC
You will get:
Nickname: your username, my case laksman91
Enter hostname: irc.swiftirc.net
Password: you will come back here after you set this up and register your nickname in step 3.
http://cl.ly/1P1v063D0j0d281r3e3j/Screen_shot_2011-03-08_at_8.43.07_PM.png
Go to Options Tab: Enter : /join #tm3
http://cl.ly/3k0m1R3F2p1V1c221l0A/Screen_shot_2011-03-08_at_8.43.35_PM.png
3. Register nickname, once in the #tm3 chat window type: /msg Nickserv REGISTER password password(confirm) email email(confirm)
4. You should be receiving an e-mail confirm it.
a. Go back to step 2 enter the password you just set there
b. Click Options again and enter /identify (input password)
Voila.

requesting to have the IRC webchat link added under "quick links" in nav.
two issues with that:
1) All the links in the QL nav are to stay internal to TM3. the IRC webchat is not hosted, or officially moderated by TM3, thus I do not think this is the best move
2) there is not significant demand for live chat

either this will grow over the year, or people will get bored and stop using it we'll just have to wait and see =]
