95% of the city wasnt on the roads today because schools were shut down.
If it wasnt for TDSB closing schools - that 20 minutes would have taken 1.5 hours easily.

Went to work today scarborugh to downtown on the DVP.
Best drive ever! I was there in 30 min, the road was clvered but even goig dlwn at 60km man it was so fast. Had a blast driving in the snow
Got to work only 4 of 14 people were at worm. Even the manager who loves on the f*** subway line (younge and sheppard) called a snow day!
Im not so upset TDSB closed schools, i am upset at the media, they hype up the storms so much and scare people! Then ot all fizzles out, they get it wrong all the time.
Add that to the fact that most people in toroto are just lazy ****s who will do anythin to get a free day off!

Don't know if it's just for Toronto. I have lived in Vancouver for over 10 years, and people started to panic whenever there is a snow forecast. 3cm...and it might cause people to drive for an hour in order to go home/work.

If you want to get yourself injured/killed, that's cool.
The reason the government can/should "tell you what to do" in this case is to reduce the risk you impose upon other people on the roads.

That's why there are mandatory taxes paid on mandatory auto insurance. And even more taxes on fuel for the car that's taxed up the wazoo every year you own the car.
And if you do get into an accident - insurance goes up along with the associated taxes. Not to mention you may have to buy another car, that you would have to pay taxes on again....

17mins from Brant st to Burloak on the highway, not to bad at all, just take it easy on the ramps.

the 401W was not bad this morning around 10am, saw couple of cars pull off to the shoulder at times and saw a smashed up Prius getting towed away but it wasnt too bad. Changing lanes was kinda tense tho cause i could feel the car slipping even tho i'm on X-ice 2's :/ The drive from my house to the highway was interesting tho. I did a powerslide with my back wheels while making a right turn going like 20km/h lol freaked out a dude in a civic in the opposite end, saw him mouthing OMG lol

If those Xi2s are more than a year or two old chances are you've worn through the "good" part of the tires.
My Hankooks are doing a great job dealing with this stuff, though it really isn't much. I just hate having to watch out for people who feel the need to slam on their breaks only to mash the go pedal to make a turn. Almost rear ended someone because they were too lazy to brush the snow off the pack of their pathfinder. No lights+no vision out back=bad idea.

Holy Shit, I was on the 401E at 5:30am after a gruelling 10 hour shift, the 401 was pure crap at 5:30am . I don't think they even put any salt down, the roads were bad, not many could go over 60kph safely. Almost lost it twice on Hoggs Hollow bridge, also had to crash barrel thru atleast 2 foot walls of snow left by earlier plows, and to top it off I don't think they even plowed Kennedy or Midland by that point. I had a terrible time with traction. Think it may be time for a new set of snows.
145 kph on the qew today with no issues
You would have never been able to do that on the 401, you'd be in a guard rail for sure. I checked out CP24 when I got home, some areas had been plowed and salted well, others were in terrible shape!....I give a thumbs down to the city plowing this storm, too slow to react or just bad planning. It was a holiday and an overnight storm, what could possibly be the reasons for not having the Major Highway in Canada/Toronto not plowed properly by 5:30am? or some major roads at all?...beats me.

Also I don't know why all the hate on all seasons. I am still on all seasons and I live near Barrie. I have no problem driving in snow or ice. It's all reading the road conditions and driving accordingly. Ya I might slip a little when taking off at an intersection, but thats when I drop it into 2nd and just barely touch the pedal. I am able to drive more competently than many SUV's with snow tires.
Having snow tires doesn't make people better drivers. It just gives them false confidence in something that isn't going to help them at all because they will still drive like idiots. To someone a little more experienced or intellegent obviously snow tires are going to offer greater grip and traction. But traction doesn't help when idiots just floor their gas to get going at an intersection. Or slam and lock up their brakes because they panic when they feel their tires slip a little bit.
Government mandates on snow tires won't do anything to improve road conditions, nor will it reduce the amount of accidents. If they are going to mandate something that would actually make a difference is some sort of policy where everyone has to take a winter driving course and pass it to get their license. Or have to renew it every couple years. That would solve most weather related problems. because it would get the useless drivers that are incapable of understanding that snow is slippery off the roads...and maybe teach some of the more competent drivers something about driving in snow.

although i did not see many accidents traffic was really horrible on tuesday. I ended up being 15 min late for class which made my assignment to be marked at 70% of the overall mark :bang
And maybe its because its the first time ive driven my car in toronto snow storm traffic but the amount of salt on the road makes my car spin even more if i go even a little over 20 around a corner ... this and being stuck on an up-grade in a traffic jam on salt'/snow covered roads... thank god for the little "M" mode on my transmission :P

A lot of people do not realize that your all-season tires do not work the same in winter as they do in winter, ecspecially when the rubber gets really cold people do not think they may need extra room.
Even my winterforce tires can be a bugger in the cold weather.

If it is mandatory to get winter tires, most of the cheap-ass drivers who drive crap boxes not even worth a set of tires will buy the cheapest worn out but still legal tires which will now have even less durability and friction than regular all seasons..

A couple of years ago I had to badger my dad into replacing the all-seasons on his Beetle (still haven't converted him to winters, but oh well). After replacing them he admitted he noticed a difference, even though he'd thought they were ok before (still had decent tread but I could tell the grip was dying out).

All Seasons are okay in summer, but they don’t come close to winter tires on snow and ice. The difference in acceleration, cornering and stopping power can range from five to 20 per cent, depending on your car, technique conditions. That improvement may spell the difference between crashing and getting home.
The most important feature of winter tires isn’t their more aggressive tread: What really matters most is their special rubber compound, which keeps them soft at lower temperatures, increasing traction.
Use winter tires on all four wheels: Many drivers still believe that you only need winter tires on the driven wheels. Wrong. Although the driven wheels are key to acceleration, braking and cornering call for traction at all four corners. Mixing winter and non-winter tires creates a dangerous traction imbalance that can throw you out of control.

I agree with you but many/most people have come to rely on Winter tires as a "crutch" they think that because they have them driving will be the exact same as driving in the summer on a dry road. And when they try to stop, or start or anything they don't adjust their driving habits which is why there are soo many accidents lately when the weather is moderately bad
. I often "pull" away from people or SUVs or trucks that have winters on them at stop lights after it turns green, because I know I can't floor it and expect to go...I slowly pull away and then once I am at a certain speed I know I can "floor" it to pull through the slush. I think what would be most useful (more so than snow tires) is a mandatory winter driving course or something. People might then understand why they have to change their driving style, and then they can use their snow tires informed and educated about why they will actually help. because right now if anything I think they are causing more harm then good. (for the reason that people who don't understand are relying on them too much)

It's a difference when its a white out and you can't see 10feet in front of you (like what I drove home in last Saturday night from Campbelleville), and seeing the traffic for 2km in front of you.
For instance, on Saturday night I could not see so I did 25-30km/hr in 4x4. I didn't put it in 4x4 and do 80...Common sense goes a long way.
Now that stretch of highway where the accident was is horrible, and another 40mins east between Cobourg and Trenton is even worse. It's slowing down and using common judgement that makes the difference. I hope no one is extremely injured in the accident.

A big thanks to everyone that made my drive 4.5 hrs from London tonight, big ups to the drivers in the fast lane that were going so slow it made it difficult to pass them since the trucks were blowing by us in the two inner lanes and to sunshine douche in the Excursion who missed his exit and tried to occupy the lane I existed in.

You need to be careful about how you post things. When you generalize a group, expect some backlash. Also, if anyone posts about something about a driver or or people drive, make sure your not guilty of the same thing. If you think you hurt me, get over it. It'll take more than you to do that.

People are idiots. I've been saying for years that it's not RWD or the mandating of snow tires that'll help; it's actually teaching people how to drive that Ontario needs. I spent the morning zipping around in a '13 Accord Coupe V6 and even without "omgomgsnowtires" I didn't skid once. It's about modulating the clutch and throttle to ensure you don't put too much power down and slip.

"engine brake" is actually worse in the snow/ice. If you use the brake pedal, all 4 wheels are contributing to slowing the car. If you add in the engine then the front wheels are now trying to slow the car more than the rear wheels. If you notice you're not slowing down enough and press the brakes harder, the front wheels are almost guaranteed to lock up. You gotta maintain the balance of traction between all 4 wheels, not force the front to grip more when they can't.

If done properly your stopping distance in rough conditions will reduce. If you are just stepping on the brakes only you have less traction going to the wheels. Sounds weird but the car isn't connected and planted with just braking. Adding downshifting to regular braking can not only help with braking, but if suddenly you need to accelerate you have a better chance of being in the appropriate gear.
Maybe I haven't articulated my thought properly and I could be horrible wrong.

How bad do your tires need to be that you get stuck on a 1% grade? Just watched some idiot struggle in front of our building while cars moved freely around him. Eventually he turned around and headed the other way. Of course you can't go downhill forever.
After further consideration, it's more like a 5% grade, and now there is more snow a lot of people are struggling. But this was earlier when there wasn't much snow.
And for those that say no to snow tires, I just watched a brand new FRS get stuck, on obviously brand new all season tires. Don't do it people.

Last night on the way home after wings, Gian and I drove by a poor Z4 getting up close a personal with a snow bank on Hwy 7. My guess is no winter tires. See way too many luxury cars at work running on all seasons. Spend the extra cash on some winters people!!

I got my winters on and drove into work from Shelburne to Orangeville and was still able to do 70-80kms per hour and feel safe but the other retards running there all seasons need to get the hell out of the way for people that know how to drive in the snow and that have prepared there cars properly for it.

Kept the truck in 4x4 the whole way and no problems at all, came right through town.
Passed a few 2wd trucks that were stuck , and 2 tractor trailers, one with a flatbed and no weight on his 5th wheel.
I also keep no weight in my box , thats what the button is for.
Last night I saw a BMW 6 series get stuck on a slight uphill. lol smh. Dropped my gf home and the giant CAA tow truck was there to help.
I wonder how long it will be before my neighbourhood's streets are plowed if at all.

Had no problems today lowered on prokits and yellows. Hankook I pikes are great winter tires. Many people stayed home so the 404 going south was no problem. About 10-20 stalled cars on the way to work.

*sigh*...for the most part I was fine today, came all the way into work driving safely and steadily from north of Alliston, I made pretty good time 2and a half hours and got to work on time...in my all seasons. However then I went out at lunch time and was fine too until I was trying to go around a corner through the crap that a snow plow had dumped there and the guy in front of me stopped :flaming for whatever reason...and of course while he drove away, I was going no where...it's amazing how many people just passed by me looking at me stuck there without stopping to help..."I stopped 3 times on the way home last night to help people get unstuck"...finally 3 guys came along and gave me a hand, made a few passing comments on my lack of snowtires... :rolleyes and I carried on my way...however now my front tires are almost bald... :s guess I should have rotated them before winter...my rear tires have lots of tread on them

Was entertained at lunch by the van that took 15 minutes to get past our building (again, its less than a 5% grade). He was damn stubborn though. Would go 10 feet forward, get stuck spinning, then slowly reverse about 20 feet and try again. Finally made it up - but seriously he should have just turned around and gone some other way lol.
Actually the whole day has been entertaining with people getting stuck out there.

hopefully this will remind u of the importance of winter tires. i dont see how u can live in barrie without them since theres way more snow up there. also, i think its a good idea for everyone to carry a small shovel in their trunk. i need to get one of those plastic runner things they have as well (they look like ramps)

It's 4pm and the plows haven't even touched my area (South Scarlem)!!. Well actually it looks like they made a pass about 15cm ago lol, only to leave 2ft banks of snow across most adjoining streets. Glad I booked today off! I trekked out earlier and holy shit, cars all over the place either stuck or possibly dead, reminded me of a Walking dead road scene lol. Anyways other then plowing my way thru several snow-plow banks, my traction sucked...Time for new snows I guess, hoping no more major snow this year and I'll splurge on a major snow tire purchase next year...Hakks or Michelins.

Toronto has 3x the land mass 5x the people and only average 20less cm of snow per year.
Where I live,it averages a few cm more then ottawa. And where im from averages about 40cm more. So take it from me. It's decently bad in Toronto today.

Story to this. Went out to rescue the gf her bus slide into a curb backwards got stuck had to go get her in Brampton.
Going back home I pulled over and helped dig out 4 cars and what do I get? I get stuck in my own complex to to some stupid lady that cut me off and flew out of her driveway into me so I had to stop and got stuck.

sooo...I discovered the reason as to why I kept getting stuck (and no it wasn't because I am running all seasons)...I noticed while digging myself out that the stupid splash guard underneath my engine compartment, had been totally packed with snow and was as solid as a rock...it was bent and solid snow and was basically only an inch at most probably closer to half an inch above the ground...so it kept acting as a ramp that would lift my front tires off the ground anytime I drove over thick snow...has anyone else had this problem? or heard of anything like this. (I think it happened when I reversed all the way out of my driveway that morning, since I left early and hadn't cleared my driveway yet, and my driveway is approximately 100 ft long)
On a related note, does anyone know approximately how much the splash guard is to replace for a gen1? I think it is permanently bent out of shape since all the snow seems to be melted out of it, but it is still only an inch or two above the ground

^ I think the splash guards are around $140 from the dealer. If your interested we're trying to get a GB started for the corksport, made of aluminum, so no more issues. If we get ten peeps on it, the price if I remember correctly is $200 + shipping.
