View Full Version : Piston Slap or Cold Carbon Rap, 2.5L Motor

I have two Mazda's, an 04 with the 2.3L, and an 09 with the 2.5L.

My 04 is quiet, even on cold startups.
My 09, with 30k on it, is very noisy on cold startups, definitely a bit of diesel
noise.

The 09 is new to me ... not a Mazda3, but a Mazda6 GT.
I understand the 2.5L is basically the same motor as my 2.3L, but its so much
louder on startup.
It quiets down after about 10 minutes of driving, and you cannot hear the noise
from the interior.

When I take it in for the next oil change, I'll have the dealer take a look at it.

Are these motors prone to piston slap or carbon build up?

Thanks for any advice.

did you check injectors
and is it only when the car is cold ?

Its most noticeable on very cold days.

Definitely has a bit of a diesel clatter, as opposed to a fuel injector tick.

I had a 1999 Accord with severe piston slap. It sounds like a milder version,
quieter, but the same type of sound.

I'm not overly concerned, as I have 44 months of powertrain warranty left.

If its a known issue, or if there is a TSB on this issue, I'd like to bring it up
with my service advisor on the next visit.
