I've been tossing around the idea of trying my hand at a small video feature of my car come spring/summer this year. I'm thinking of renting a Canon 5D II which has video capabilities, plus I'm already familiar with it since I currently have a 5D. However I would need one or two extra people to help out for some simple rolling shots, and maybe some shots on roads if things go well. Just wondering if anyone here has any type of experience shooting video, whether really basic or advanced.

If this comes together I'd be more than happy to do at least some still photos of your car for helping out!

when you say basic experience you mean with a point and shoot camera or camcorder?

I think he meant with DSLR shooting, meaning HD capable stuff. I'm still learning, and it's not really my forte, I want to go that route, but not soon.

I mean, beggars can't be choosers, but it would be great if someone had experience with DSLR video. However I think we could still get good results with someone that has even a little experience either with DSLR photos, or basic handheld video.

Hell, anyone who wants to try their hand at shooting video! This won't be a high-profile shoot or anything, I just wanted to hang out and try something new. So don't be shy!

I'll come out only because I want to see your setup.

I'm actually thinking of doing a short of my car to once it's done. I've only shot BMX however, I do have a Cannon HV20 though...

Good stuff Dave! I won't be nearly as low as you though, no money for an additional drop this year lol.

I can definitely come out once my car is done as well. Cuz i kinda want Dave to feature my car too =).

I have a 5D2 but never used the video feature before. Just don't have the time and opportunity.

Kevin, would you be interested in trying out the 5D's video features? :)

This statement is false. Nobody ever finishes their car :)

You for one should know this working at Nextmod lol

Bah. I'd be down for this, except I am not in the GTA. When are you thinking of doing this exactly?

Oh no set date yet, still have lots of stuff to fix up in the spring on my car. I will post about meeting up in advance so anyone interested can help figure out a date. Probably not until May or June, I just wanted to start tossing the idea around.

Hmmm sounds interesting, I'm no video expert, but I do have access to a NEX VG-10 and I wouldn't mind helping out once the dates are set.

I've got some experience with HD DSLR. Got 5D2 and some other stuff.

Should be fun. I'd be interested but depends on availability.

LOL. By way of some explanation, one of the reasons I want to go the DSLR video path is I already have a bunch of lenses I want to use (with the depth-of-field advantages they offer). I figured if I were to rent something for video I might as well go that route then. However to those who shoot video with other equipment the encouragement is appreciated!

Glad to see there is some interest in this type of meet!

FYI, I have a tentative date: Sunday June 26th. It looks like I'll be renting a 5D II for a wedding on June 25th so I'll have it over the weekend, making the Sunday good for a shoot. As I said though, tentative at this point given how far off that is.

Nice vids.... the last one is the quality I aspire to, although the first ones are where I'll probably end up (although they are still pretty good!)

Wow that last vid was truly epic... Hm I have a 7D (my XSi can't do video) though I haven't played with the video feature much. It would be nice to see you guys do this vid shoot though!

For what it's worth, this was the video that first got me thinking of doing something like this. The stance, the music, and the videography are all top-notch.

I've actually seen the last two videos before. If there's behind the scene info of the VW vid it would be amazing. I'm thinking they either used SteadiCam or some kind of trackless dolly to make the movement so damn smooth. But how-ever they did it, they did a really good job since the motion has virtually no bobble and it's so fluid. Not to mention the rack focusing and zoom out during movement is pretty smooth too (@1:50 and @2:00 respectively). The editing and music selection is really good too.
