Here's a cool Youtube video showing the differences between Fakes and Real wheels. Especially with a lot of wheels for sale these days I thought this would help the guys selling quality wheels a chance to finally unload them.

Very Interesting.....so what's considered a fake wheel brand? Something like Drag?

^I wouldn't think Enkei is one?

That was hard to watch due to the voice over. I'm also not sure if that was the best test to subject a wheel that's meant for daily driving to. When are you going to hit a wheel like that out in the street?

Devils advocate: One could argue that if you hit a wheel on the side like that in the street the rim breaking could be better as it might save your vehicles frame from the impact.

What I would personally like to see is a long term on track comparison of a brand like Rota (the evilest of replicas companies OMG!!!) vs a reputable company like Rays.

Popular replica brands: Rota, Drag, XXR (sportmaxx), VIP Status, GB Wheels

^I guess the only time you would hit a wheel like that is in a accident.

Any rim can bend or break from a serious impact. If you're not tracking your car, what's the point in getting rims worth 10-20% of the value of the vehicle itself?

Its common sense. If you want a 15 lb rim, don't cheap out...

oh i know that. im not saying just casue you spend money means its tougher but damn, ive never seen a rim that bad.

mine are voxx rims and one is bent and one is cracked. not sure if thats a reputable company but its one you hear of often enough. they still alsted me 3 years

I get to deal with this stuff everyday, and mod my car a lot. My $0.02 on it:

There is a difference between replica and fakes:

Replica wheels: Wheels that LOOK like another wheel in style. Every manufacturer has had a TE37 looking wheel or a simple 5 spoke like Dave's old wheel. Many of them are JWL and VIA certified, and come from a factory in China/Tawain/Singapore for a lot less than the original. I have no issue with these. They are a perfectly acceptable wheel, and fit most people's budgets.

Fake wheels: These are the scum. I hate FAKE products. If your going to "borrow" styling queues, that is one thing. Its another thing to pass off your product as something that it is not. Rays, Volk, Advan etc all use higher quality materials, and proprietary processes etc. This all costs money, and the consumer ends up paying for it (someone has too). These are some of the wheels you need to watch out for. If they are willing to copy a name, and a mold of a wheel, are those certification stamps real, or fake?

When you watch the video, watch the base that the rims are attached to. Is it just me or does the base that the "authentic" wheel is attached to flex much more than the other. If this is the case it would make sense that one rim is cracking and the other is not.

^ I realize that too, it doesn't look as consistent as it should be when they're testing both wheels.

Awesome article Joe.

I think thats happening because with the Real Wheel it doesn't crack so it transfers the force though the wheel into the base, The fake ones the rim takes the force of the hit and splits open all over the rim

Which could be a band thing. With the real rim transfers the engery it will destory stuff. Especially in a FWD car where the cv joints and tranny is right there.
When i hydroplained my mazda 3 my replica re30s took all the damage. if they were the real deal i would have had some tranny issues for sure.

I guess it depends on how you look at it. Depending on how fast you're going and where you are its possible for the rim cracking, snapping off and inducing a roll.. depending on how hard you hit it though, any rim will crack

Eeep. Scary stuff to a guy who's out on the market looking for rims. I've been looking at mostly used OEM stuff simply because I don't have the budget for the real thing (and I'm not tracking), and I'm scared of ending up with something with offspec, poor fitment, or grey market replicas. Luckily I've got some local buddies who have given me a hand and waved me off a couple of dogs.

The differance i see is that one rim will have a bent lip and one rim will shatter.. i rather have a bent rim vs a rim shattering and causing more damage.

at work we had an oem wheel that managed to crack in the center of the tire right round. By that i mean if you were to take the tire off you would have 2 halfs of a rim
Even OEM breaks. My RX-8 wheel has a crack in the spoke itself. how that happened I have no clue
