So for the first time this year I'm deciding to do my own taxes using this Fancy Turbo Tax program I bought at Wal-mart rather than paying $100 to H&R block....

But.... either I'm doing something really wrong, the program sucks, or I just don't know where to find any deductions.... haha!

I'm just wondering how everyone else does their taxes? Do you do yours by yourself or get an accountant to do it?

ufile.ca

I'm a student so I get to file it for free and I'm getting a good sized return this year too.

I used turbo tax, formerly quick tax. They are relavively easy to use. Use the forms sections and its pretty much just fill in the blanks. Fill out the T4 one and any other things, I also filled out the charitable donations one, the RRSP one, and medical expenses. But there are so many more.

I use Studio Tax...100% free for anyone, and relatively easy to navigate.

Turbo Tax.
You can create an account and enter all data to see what you return will be. You only pay when you want to file it. I'm sure other online tax websites are similar in this regard.

Are you using the wizard to set through? It asks all about charitable contributions, tuition, dependants, etc........

I use accountants at Liberty Tax. The peace of mind knowing it's done right is worth the money to me. And if anything is wrong I'll just send the auditor to them. :)

I used turbotax and ufile in the past, and it does make things mindlessly easy.

Problem is, its so mindlessly easy that you have absolutely zero clue how your income, tax credits, etc etc actually impact how much you pay! I've gone back to doing everything by hand (it doesn't take that long really), and then to make sure I didn't mess up I'll spend 20 minutes double checking it on the software (i used to do it on ufile which lets you do your taxes for free, but you cant submit your claim without paying if you arent a student)

yea I'm using the wizard to set it through but I guess I just thought that I'd be getting a larger return this year....

I just don't know how all these things are exactly calculated....so far I managed to receive $22 back.. but I guess that's better than paying $22 to CRA ... so I've been researching a lot on Tax Deductions...

I'm going to start using Studio File next year though... thanks for all the tips!

I used ufile for a few years and got tire of having to pay more taxes or not getting anything in return so now I pay $50 to get it done by someone that knows all the tricks and been getting money back in the range of the $500-$800 every year, all legit tho.

You'll never go back Chris. And the best thing is that it remembers all of your previous year data once you do it once. Saves so much time...

That's what I'm using too. I used to use UFile when I was a student.
The Wizard works well but I always double check it in form mode just to be safe.

problem is, when you pay someone else to do your taxes, most people do the bare minimum. i felt ripped off everytime i pay someone to do something that i could do. it takes the same amount of time, and if they mess up you are still on the hook. i use turbotax by the way and i always do a rough draft before march 1

Anyone using liberty tax or h&r block are getting ripped off. You know the course to do taxes with those companies is like 3 weeks. So you basically 50% of the time, have someone who has no idea what they are doing, doing your taxes. Myself and my wife both have our accountant do our taxes, cost us 140 for both(my wife is self employed) and I know that what i'm getting is the best I can.

I get mine done by an accountant also...$45, 20 years in business.Best reason for getting it done this way? You'll never get auditted, the taxman is more likely to accept your return with no questions asked.

I used Turbo tax for the second year and it was pretty easy. I got a pretty good return too. For years, I toiled over the papers and forms but now it's so easy.

I also use turbo tax, second year as well. Would definitely recommend this product, very simple to use and no deductions will be missed.

I noticed TurboTax is $16.99 when you file now for the parents with retirement income and carryforward information from last year.
