AC Turning on @ Wrong setting

I have just wondered - my AC compressor kicks on when it's on the lower directional setting, (aka feet position) and fan is on. I thought the compressor was supposed to only turn on automatically if it was on defog or defog+lower.

Does anyone know if/when the AC should be kicking on?

This is normal because the floor + everything to the right is connected to the A/C compressor for defrosting.

I try to keep the dial left of 12 o'clock as much as possible to keep the compressor from running.

Myself included. I wasn't sure if i bent the control cable when i was re-wiring the dash/replacing bulbs ;)
