May/2011: MS3 Tune & Dyno @ APH

I went to visit Brian@APH today, hoping to catch the MS3 w/ a GT28 getting tuned. The MS3 wasn't there today. But I got to chat with Brian. TM3 has many things planned this year and APH is definitely game...let's hope for an opportunity for all to see Brian's track car for this yr...who knows, we might even be able to convince him to give out rides!

Anyway, disregarding these first few days of so called Spring, weather is getting better overall. Is you pedal foot itching yet? Brian will likely finish up his 400+whp (on street tune) track beast in April, so that makes May the ideal time for some tunin', dyno, and general rompin' ruckus.

Anyone interested in another MS3 get-together along with dyno and tuning?

Brian has offered us a day in mid-May for a Dyno Day. Those who are interested in getting tuned are encouraged to do so before this Dyno Day, so Brian MAY be intersted in Tuning on Saturday, and Dyno on Sunday.

Plus, this is the best way to keep things honest and true for everyone, since you're not just comparing to yourself, but others of the same car on the same day and on the same dyno, operated by the same person.

We also run on a DynaPak, which in my experience reads between Mustang Dyno's on the low end and DynoJet's on the high/inflated end, with the ZERO correction multiplier that we run. At the end of the day, you want to know what your car runs at and how it's doing compared to others for its health and cost/benefit analysis of your mod plans...it's not about who has the highest HP MS3.

we'll try for same price as last year for dyno. $60/car - 3 pulls w/ tail pipe sniffer, with full colour print-outs. The data is also stored for future reference.

I was told from Brian at aph that if I tune at 4th I'll only get the power up to 4th. So he helped me tune it at 5th so I get my power all the way to 5th.

I hope this dyno proves to me that my turbo still works properly. When I'm beside a median on the highway (left lane of the Gardiner) with the window open when I go part boost in 6th to speed up a bit, the turbo spool doesn't sound smooth. If I downshift to 4th and pin it the spooling sounds a bit better.

A little update. I've asked Brian to arrange another day for the OMC/Ottawa guys to tune. I think it'll be more fair for those guys.

any place can dyno an auto trans.

all you have to remember is to get the car in whatever gear is closest to 1:1 to get the most data points (in the 4 speed auto that would be 3rd gear), get it up to a speed that won't cause kick-down (if the manual-mode doesn't automatically kick down, then bonus), then go WOT.

I'd like to try again with the hood closed as my BAT's don't reach over 105 on the streets currently. You can see how the heat soak effected my numbers.

the day went so well that even when burgers were forgotten, they still ended up being perfectly cooked. heh


Did tranny fluid today and noticed my cone filter was really loose! When i reinstalled a fresh filter, the boost sound was less noticable, my car felt like it boosted more consistantly to redline. I wonder if the loose filter was the cause of the boost fluctuations at high rpm?

Could it be possible that the blue spring i have in my forge bpv is not strong enough? Should i go to the red spring?

I never needed more than the blue spring and one shim when I was running stage 2+ in my Forge BPV.

Get the AP...load up ATR...you'll see. It's most likely your wastegate maxing out.

I switched to the spring with the most tension (red?) back when I put on my downpipe.

I believe our cars are supposed to run the middle spring, which I believe is yellow... the blue spring is too weak and they've stopped shipping with those pre-installed and the yellow is now considered the min. They tell you that the red is for really high boost, but I had no trouble running it @ 18-20 psi. In fact, I felt like it made the car hold boost+drive better.... (I might have the colors confused, but for purposes of this post, blue = weakest, yellow = middle ground and considered min for our MS3, red = high boost application. If I'm wrong about the colors, adjust accordingly;)

PS: I'm using a Forge V2 BPV.

CS SRI+TIP, CS TMIC, Cobb AP tweaked stg1 (lowered the boost a bit and upped the AFR).

The green line was the heatsoaked run (2nd run).

Then it actually is a pretty good representation. The gear ratios are the only remaining factor, but still, good comparison!

The nicest thing about the AP is the power gains after 5500rpm (or whatever it is on the Gen2... I think it's been moved a little higher). Completely different car.....

for comparison purposes, and not accounting for the calculated gear ratio, Ami can take his Max. TQ value and multiply it by the gear ratio. This will give the unadulterated axle torque value that can then be compared to other people's axle torque value.

example:
(Max TQ from dyno graph) X (gear ratio) = axle torque

Ami
251.658 ft-lbs X 4.625 = 1163.92 ft-lbs

fywdyl
281.256 ft-lbs X 4.287 = 1205.74 ft-lbs

snotrocket (tq value was blurry in the youtube vid)
313.004 ft-lbs X 4.293 = 1343.73 ft-lbs


given that Ami is making 1163.92 ft-lbs max TQ, if his gear ratio were in the 4.29 range like the other Gen2's (fywdyl and snotrocket), that would make it 271.31 ft-lbs

let's also try and calculate Ami's HP if his gear ratio were 4.29

from his dyno graph, we have:

Max HP @ rpm = 237.667 @ 5745rpm

TQ = (HP X 5252)/RPM = (237.667 X 5252)/5745 = 217.27 ft-lbs

217.27 ft-lbs X gear ratio = 217.27 X 4.625 = 1004.87 ft-lbs (meaning, at his Max HP, he's making 1004.87 ft-lbs axle torque)

HP = (TQ X rpm)/5252 = (1004.87 X 5745)/5252 = 1099.2 divide this by the common 4.29 ratio of 4th gear in a gen2 = 256.224 hp

meaning that IFF Ami's calculated gear ratio were 4.29 instead of the DynaPack calculated 4.625, his MAX wheel HP and TQ numbers would be 256.224 hp and 271.31 ft-lbs

ami, you somehow must've got a gen1 transmission bolted into your car ...that's 2 separate instances where the DynaPack has calculated your ratio to be that of a Gen1's 4th gear while other Gen2's (dynoed on the same day) are getting very close to theoretical for the Gen2 transmission.
