View Full Version : For people who had rust in wheel wells, have you used this?
Hello everyone,
I am starting to notice very faint orangish/rusty lookin residue on my wheel wells.. I think I better get it fixed before it spreads.. hopefully dealer covers it...
On a side note, for those who got it fixed under warranty, did any of you attempt at using dupli-color undercoating? apparently it's really good for that type of problem as it provides a rubberized material that protects the paint from chipping, which prevents rust from forming...
I thought this could help prolong the damage that could happen... Having said that, since this incident, I have been paying attention to many cars, and I must say, many compact cars that I see also have some rust developing, mind you I can only see that with cars with silver/white colour, or any lighter colour...
Anyway, thought i'd get some discussion or experiences on this..

I actually want to try 3m film or some kind of vinyl to wrap the wheel wells and prevent contact with salt. Kind of like clear bra or some sort for the fender.

don't feel bad, mines all over the wheel wells. I'm going to try fix it this year so we'll see how it goes....I might roll em but don't want to be spending on it more than i have to...
a little off-topic, but i (total noob) was just wondering what the hell is this (is it rust or something that can be scrubbed off)?

That's rust but its covered by summer wheels so don't worry about it?
When I rolled my fenders I shot a product similar to what was posted above inside my wheel wells. It's a losing battle and it sucks but I will keep fighting!

I absolutely LOVE rubberized undercoating (for areas under the car anyway). I haven't used the 3M stuff, just Crap Tire's generic brand but it is still awesome. Just clean off any loose rust and then spray with the coating. It sticks to EVERYTHING so make sure you cover anything you don't want it on. It dries really fast, and its flexible.
I just coated the rear coilover springs I got from Dentinger, which had lots of rust on them. Same procedure, and I think it will hold up well to the flexing of the spring.

I you dont actually replace the metal, or at least sandblast it, the rust will be back in a year.

I won't go as far as to say that the rubberized coating will 100% seal up the metal, but I'd venture it gets very close. And if you remove both water and oxygen from the area, chemically rust cannot continue to form (even if some rust still exists underneath the sealant). Even if a small amount of air or moisture is trapped under the sealant, cleaning off the surface first should mean this amount is very small, and only a very small amount of rusting can still occur under the coating before that water/oxygen is used up.

Little bump!!
I am looking to buy a 08 mazda 3 in the next few months here.. one without rust!! ahah
Has anyone attempted the such said techniques to prevent the wheel wells from rusting as I know fullwell those are going first. Calgary salts the crap outta the roads here. Does anyone know the actual reason they start to rust? It is from rock chips and just thin paint? Does the backside of the lip not have proper coating on it?? I am thinking of using some 3M clear guard to put around the edge of the sheet metal in hopes to prevent salt touching the metal.

All i know is that the lip there collects ridiculous amounts of rocks and dirt and it just sits there forever. Probably just takes one little scratch to the metal (which doesn't even need a rock chip - it could start where the rear quarter panel meets the rear bumper - if you hit something or something hits you just once the two pieces will move and will scratch paint at the joint enough to cause this) and since the metal is so thin, and theres so much crap in the area it all rusts within no time.
