View Full Version : Drunken Brain storm....RIM TINTING

so I'm thinking of trying something different (at least that I know of)

I got to drinking with my neighbour the other night, and in a drunken brain storm - we thought about tinting our rims. Yes - TINTING.

-Plastidip and powder coating cannot achieve the same effect as tint.
-I figured using a a high-quality scratch proof tint can hold upto road abuse just as well as a rattle-can paint job would.
-Using VHT Night Shade would be very difficult to get an even coat on such a large surface.

The OEM GT Rims aren't a bad candidate - a rather flat surface, and not too many curvs/bends. The final product could potentially give the same color tone of the Shinkas

What do you guys think of tinting rims?
Any ideas which sponsor would be willing to try it?
Or anybody with window tinting experience willing to help me test it out with some crappy tire tint film?

I've done a tint job before but only on flat surfaces. The inner curve is what scares me.

Let's discuss

**edit: I hope nobody beats me to this idea LOL**

Lol, I like that idea. Not sure if it's possible, but I think your rims will definitely be different.

How about using Lamin-x film?

does anyone know which is easier to wrap / apply?

I was thinking how there are sponsors that can wrap headlights/tail-lights (that have some crazy curvatures to them) it should be a lot easier to work with rims

ummm im sure you could use lamin-x but it wouldnt be fun... lol

isnt lamin-x a lot thicker than window tint?

my main concern is heat from the brakes/rotors.
Would that eff up the material?

I think it wouldn't hold up. The edges from the tint will eventually lose it's adhesive edge due to not getting a single sheet of tint to go around the entire circumference of the wheel spokes. Brake dust, dirt, water will just pick at it. I like the idea though!

is that any hotter than having fog lights on for for 6 hours?

The GT rims Rims are 17" - Window tint comes in rolls of 24" lengths
I also thought about keeping the edges down BEHIND the rim. Im thinking clear plastidip can help keep the edges down

Lol, crazy ideas Eric. But I think clear plastidip can hold it down.

Yea, LaminX is thicker, but if it's going to be at the face of the rim, then it should be ok.

these are the rims to get tinted (or something similar)
I mean - if tint can be wrapped around tail lights...

I dunno - I might grab some of that "static" tint to see if it'll hold or curve using a heat gun

my only other concern is getting the tint up inside the bolt openings

There are paint shops that can add tint to a clear coat and sell it in an aerosol can. At least I know of one in waterloo...

yeah - I was thinking about the "Spray Tint" (the VHT Smoked spray).
But from past expereience - it is really difficult to get an even / consistant coverage on large surfaces

I didn't mean VHT... But I guess it'd likely end up behaving similarly.

Duplicolor Metalcast perhaps? I might give it a whirl.

Hmmm is this like a paint or similar to plastidip? I wonder if plastidip comes in grey....

EDIT nvm looks like it's permanent.. I'd hate to screw it up...

Anybody who paints wheels can do this. All they have to do is mix black into the clear coat and spray the wheels. The darkness of the tint is determined by how much black they put in and how many coats they apply. It'll come out looking like a super deep candy black.

All of the carbon fiber on my car has been tinted this way.

+1 I'm interested as well.

UPDATE: It's actually a water transfer technique as per their website.
