View Full Version : Sunroof leak

Last weekend with the weather finally being decent for a change, took my car through the wash and was partially sprayed by surprise when the water jets cleaned off the suds on my car.

I haven't opened up my sunroof all winter and when the water jets were going, partial sprays of water were going in. I did a quick check to ensure the sunroof was closed tightly and indeed it was.

Going to take it to the dealership next week to have a looked at but I'm wondering if anyone else has ran into this problem. Is it just a matter of replacing a seal or is it something potentially bigger? It doesn't matter what has to be done to fix the problem as I'm still under warranty (and my car is about 6 months old now).

Common issue. Since the sunroof goes both up and down, it relies on compression around the edge to seal against the rubber. The high-pressure water jets force the sunroof down slightly allowing some water to get in. Simple solution is to find a carwash that doesn't have water pressure high enough to remove the paint.

It happened a couple of times with my 2010 but not everytime. It's the high pressure wash. Try opening and closing it again and try a different wash next time to see if it happens. Also take the hose and run water over the moonroof for a minute to check for leaks.

Close the sun shade before going into the car wash, problem solved.

+1. I always just close the shade. There isn't enough water coming through to cause any damage.

Sunroofs aren't designed to prevent water from being forced through from a pressure sprayer though they do keep most of it out.

Try this: open the sunroof and spray some washer fluid on your windshield.
