View Full Version : Got my rust repaired but have some concerns (picture & video included)

I know there's a huge thread on corrosion but wanted to make one specific to my issue.
Here's the rundown:
Model year is 2005. Rust in rear wheel wells, right rear b-pillar, right rear inside bottom of door. Mazda approved repairs and dealer sent it to their preferred body shop to fix - I won't mention who. Got the car back after 5 business days.
It looks like they applied a layer of something to the wheel well. I assume this is to help prevent further rust. I've seen other cars (ie. Lexus ES350, some other 1st gen mazda 3's that had rust repairs, and maybe even 2011 3's?) that have something similar except theirs is usually a much thicker layer - I have no idea whether they are the same thing however. Take a look at the picture and video. There are some areas that didn't adhere to the body.
I am wondering:
- what is this?
- what should I do about the parts that didn't adhere. I'd rather do something myself rather than send it back to the dealer/shop.

Take it back, the second you do something they can avoid claiming responsibility. My car is going back in a week or two.

I'm assuming that they sandblasted(?) the rusted areas, cleaned up a bit, covered it up with body filler, put this layer of something over, and painted it. I'm also assuming that rust will come back probably within the year. Whatcha think?
I'm (again) assuming that the proper way to do this would to take out and replace (or cut and weld back new material) the affected areas? How common is it for Mazda to approve this type of fix, since I assume it will cost a lot more...or am I going to have to read that long ass corrosion thread to get this answer?
At this point my car is just a car and it's a huge inconvenience for me to battle Mazda for this and to send the car in for lengthy repairs so I don't know whether I will take it back. One thing's for sure, I won't be buying another one.

Both of my fenders have something like that after they were fixed. It looks like before they painted they put some sort of extra seal around the new wheel arch to protect the edge. I'm not too sure what the material is. It actually looks like something that should last a while on my car.
Unfortunately it looks like the body shop that worked on your car botched it pretty bad. Take it back.

thats a horrible job.
i did better on an 86 olds last summer with an orbital sander, body filler and a can of spray paint.
It was my first time doing any kind of body work. ( from start to finish, including paint)

Same with my ladies car, and hers is the same colour as yours. It seems like every winter it comes back.

I went out today and took a few pictures of my arches for comparison. Sorry for the filthy car pics.
This is the drivers side that was done last year. Still holding up well.

^ Fortunate for you it looks pretty decent but mine was also fixed and less than 5 months it came back but looking alot worst.
Xerox (forgot your name lol), I'd take it back cause it looks pretty shitty considering it's bugging you enough to post it up here. Good luck.

John,
Avante Mazda approved of my rust repairs and I got mine done at BMC Auto. The work looks like its from them as well. I was told that the inner film will help by preventing moisture entering the metal, thus avoiding future corrosion. That was over two years ago and upon inspection this spring, I still don't see any rust a forming? Mind you its very hard to tell with the film and the dirty/grime that has accumulated. At this point, I honestly don't even care anymore as I know the rust is coming back, just a matter of time.
It does look like they need to fix up the film on yours as its not adhering.

Thanks Rob. I pretty much share the same mindset.
I'll get the dealer/shop to fix for now and hope it'll hold off rust for a few more years. If (or when) it comes back I'll push them to cut out/replace/weld new panels.
Thanks everyone for your input!

I have had my right rear wheel well repaired 3 times and the rust still comes back. Once its there, good luck getting rid of it.

+1...just got mine fixed and in the process the damaged my tint on the rear windows, and I got paint overspray on my rear bumper, and front grill, and front bumper and hood!
Tint has been fixed going back to visit the dealership on Monday!
Thanks Rob. I pretty much share the same mindset.
