View Full Version : Speaker question
I have a 2010 Mazda3 sportGT six speaker system. I want to keep the OEM 6CD headunit. How much difference will aftermarket speakers make to the sound? is the difference worth the cost and hassle.
I don't want to get into amps, I just want some improvement on the tinny sound of the stock speakers.

The Fisher Price feeling speakers that come from Mazda are absolutely terrible. You can pick up a set of some mid-range JBL's for less than $70 on ebay and they'll sound soooooo much better.

Yes, you will notice a huge improvement in mids and highs, but without the power of an amp, bass will not improve as much.

A sub woofer also gives your music a fuller richer sound.

The OP specifically said he does not want to get into buying amps, so a sub is out of the question.
As mentioned by others get a good set of speakers and to improve bass you can try sound deadening in the doors or get speaker baffles; which do 2 things protect your speaker from water and enhance the bass.

Thanks for the replies, I am not into huge base either I just want to improve on the tinny sound that I have now. If replacing the speakers will improve that then I will be happy. Crutchfield have some 5x7 Infinity Kappa speakers for a decent price. I believe 5x7 are the size i need.

^Definately look into the baffles then, they are relatively cheap like $20 a set or less and they come in all speaker sizes and minimal depths....they will improve the low frequencies of whatever speakers you choose.

You'll need 6.5 Components for the fronts because remember in the front you have tweeters and the wiring in the car is set up for components so buying a regular coax speakers will not work for the fronts.
You'll need 6.5 coaxs for the rear.

I'm doing the same thing to my 2011 Sport. No amp/sub. But I'd recommend possibly getting the doors lined with hushmat.
The owner of an audio shop here has his car (not Mazda) set up with 4 pioneer speakers without amp/sub and the mats, and they really increase the quality.
I'm somewhat hesitant because I don't know what the long term negative effects of this could be. Still doing my homework - but definitely something to consider.
I'm in the same situation as you though, I don't need huge bass or even loud/blaring music, its just the quality I'm after.

Thats not exactly true you can definately use co-axials and the wiring is not really much of an issue. But with that said, usually, although more expensive, components is the way to go for (arguably) better sound.
Also forgot to mention check the minimal wattage of whatever speakers you get as the oem headunit is quite lackluster when it comes too power. Most component systems will not run properly with the low wattage from the oem hu.

So in the 2010 GT the tweeters do not have a cross over, they are just wired in parallel with the door speakers. It is perfectly fine to use co- axial speakers. I finished up installing speakers and an amp. It was well worthwhile, the difference in sound quality is night and day.

So you went for an amp!, what amp/speakers did you end up using?

I got a Kenwood 4 channel amp 4x45 watt per channel . with Kenwood Co-axial for the fronts. Later I will get Infinity Reference for the fronts and put the Kenwood in the rear doors. Now I realise from an audiophile point of view this would count as a base system. However for the improvement over the stock sound I am perfectly happy.
I got the stuff from Crutchfield.ca. Man their prices are good, free shipping and they were delivered the next day. The online tech. help is hard to beat, overall a good buying experience. I would definitely buy from them again.
