View Full Version : Rays Mazdaspeed Wheels vs Miata "Shinkas"

My recently acquired a set of Rays Mazdaspeed wheels :bana. They're a bit scuffed up and require a good refinish and fresh powdercoat but shouldn't be a problem with so many vendors that provide wheel refinishing. I really like the "shinka" finish and hope to have the Rays redone in the same colour. I don't quite have the balls to get it done up in shades of neon or radical colours like other TM3 members :P. Does anyone know a company that can replicate this "shinka" colour or should I just stick with the original finish?

Others have looked to have the Skinka look replicated as well and no one has been able to do it exactly as far as I am aware.

Here is a thread regarding the same type of question.

If you can't get a good hyper-silver/shinka colour, I'd powdercoat the Rays a light bronze ;)

Either way, two of the best looking OEM wheels I've ever seen :)

If you can go shinka it would be cool, but it's pretty impossible to do as far as I knoe

One of them are Miata rims.... the one on the left

Not that I don't have faith in powdercoating, but for those looking for a Shinka-type colour I think a professional paint shop is a better choice. Its a little easier to layer up the paints and use the proper translucent silver, and see what the result is layer by layer.... without having to bake in an oven to see the final results.

Will it be 100% as durable as powdercoat? No, but properly done it will still be very durable.

CARCONE'S IS WAAAYY TO PRICEY

Here's my suggestion http://www.unionrim.com/

or go with the guys FLIPDADY used.

edit - painting rims isnt as bad as people think. if done properly, can last just as long as powdercoating

Thanks, I'll go check that place out. Do you think the guys that did the bimmer rim used paint as well or powdercoat?

I think BMW finish is painted. My wheels were just painted as opposed to powdercoating. Only way to get the color I wanted.

Just as durable as the paint on your car.

Just as durable as the paint on your car.

A curb will damage the finish on powder coat, the same way it will damage it if it was painted.
just dont rattle can it. LOL
I really dont remember how PCing rims got so popular

Miss my old MS Rays:(

Al, sell the Miata rims and keep the Rays. I'll message you with my contact and see if he can hook you up with what you're looking for.

Most definitely Justin :)

In case anyone was need pricing from Carcones for comparison, they wanted 140 for straight powder and clear, 240 for "shinka" (hyperblack). All pricing based on per wheel and additional $100 for install/balance

His Miata rims are a special edition version. They are hella rare. Whoever ends up with them is one lucky SOB. Personally, I'd keep 'em.
