View Full Version : Car Jerking when in 1st and 2nd

I normally shift to 2nd at 3000rpm and the car ends up jerking. It also happens when im stuck in traffic and I'm on 1st or 2nd, I press the gas, the car jerks then as well. I usally stay within 2000 and 3000. Am I shifting wrong?(never happens when shifting to the higher gears.)

What rpm range do you normally shift gears?

depends, sometimes high, sometimes low. Could be anything, could just be technique... it's hard to say without seeing it for yourself.

You might be letting go of the clutch too fast brother

Or the motor mounts suck and you get that annoying bucking

I do the same.. Usually shifts at 2500.. Sometimes at 2000.. For me, the car jerks ONLY if I let go of the clutch quickly...

Just wanted to ask, since when did you start noticing this jerking motion?

car usually jerks when you release the clutch too quick.. or could be engine mount,, clutch..

Try giving a bit of gas before clutching out into 2nd and also release the clutch slower than you would for the higher gears. Inputs and engine braking are amplified in the lower gears as well so if you aren't gentle modulating the gas pedal you'll get bucking. My shift points change depending on how I'm driving ...if it's very casual then maybe around 2500rpm ...usually around 3000rpm and if jumping on it then it's around 5000rpm. This is with a 6-speed Mazdaspeed3.

I think the same thing, car will jerk if you let go of the clutch too fast. To be safe, just hold it in between until you pick up speed.
You don't jerk in higher gears because the car is already moving very fast

I find that this happens most when the car isnt warm enough.

What are signs of a worn out clutch? Becaue it would seem I need to be at 4000rpm not 3000 to reach 100kms on 5th. Basically I need to have 1000rpm more to reach regualr speeds than usual

Whoa, that's a little to high I think...... Hmmm, it might not be the clutch.... It could be a leak somewhere or other things (sparks not enough, fuel pump, etc)... Did you notice a loss in torque???

Ya, I've been disconnecting the batery a lot because I've been installing audio stuff. Coukd it be the battery? The jerking now happenson 3rd and 4th gear when letting go on the gas when below 3000rpm

Maybe the battery's the culprit, although I'm not sure.. From what I understand, being at high rpms with less speed means that compression maybe struggling.. I mean, the cranks are all spinning but at a higher rate.. It could also be that the spark plugs are not firing properly and not igniting the gas/air inside the chamber.. There's a lot of stuff to be considered, but I'm not a mechanic so I can't say for sure.. As for the jerking, the only reason mine jerks is if I do not balance the rev while shifting gears.. When letting go of the gas below 3000rpm, I do not feel any jerking at 3rd and 4th, but they're somewhat present at 1st and 2nd, which I think is normal as that's where the higher torque is....

Ill try and ask around, so things to check are spark plugs, fuel pump and batter, maybe clutch? Also the jerking happens when letting go of the gas WHEN NOT shifting. As a result, I think, of the car not being fast enough than normally. Kind of like dring 5kms in 5th gear. So I have to downshift when normally didn't have to

Yeah, those things are what I think would cause the jerking. As for the clutch, just a maybe, if you're only experiencing the jerking while shifting even at higher gears (3rd, 4th, 5th). I really can't pin point if it's the clutch because, once you're on gear, clutch is pretty much just in the background....

I'm starting to think that I am experiencing the same stuff as you (loss in torque) so hopefully somebody who's had this before can jump in and shed some light.. :)

Could a dirty intake filter cause this aswell?

Hmmm, that I'm really not sure of...... I really hope that an expert will chime in on this... I need to know as well what this might be.

I used to notice bucking in 1st and 2nd (and to a lesser extent 3rd and rarely 4th) when coming off the gas. Changing my rmm helped with that, but you can eliminate it with good technique in pretty much all but 1st gear.

the high rpm thing is not something I know enough to speculate on though.

Wait a minute. This IS a manual right?

You're saying it's taking more revs to reach a specific speed at a specific gear than before? That's plain impossible in a manual.

(That is unless your clutch is slipping a a lot, and if it's slipping that much at those speeds, you really wouldn't be able to move at all.)

I too notice this "bucking" in 1st and 2nd when going off the gas you speak of. It lessens as you go up the gears. Mine is 2.0L 2010 5MT with 17,000km's on it. Was your RMM defective/worn? Did you replace it with a stock/factory RMM or a higher performance unit?

yeah, our cars aren't powerful enough to buck much in the higher gears (at least that's how it was explained to me). Actually my RMM was in pretty decent shape but I'm not sure if it's been replaced before (got the car at 105k, currently at ~117k). I replaced it with a speed3 RMM, it has a bit more rubber in it (the 2.3 turbo engine is heavier than mine... and yours for that matter) so it reduced the bucking somewhat while not increasing NVH at all; I'm happy with it. Though, I know a lot of members here rave about the CPE RMM. I also have an ETD going in, probably this weekend, and those things are supposed to eliminate that kind of bounciness completely. I'll let you know how it goes.

what do you mean by bucking? do you mean misfiring? shuttering? shaking?
