View Full Version : HID Lights/FOG Lights/Day time lights for 2011 M3 GX
Hello there.
I'm a long time reader but first time poster. I know I'm probably going to get bashed for asking this but I bought a 2011 Mazda Sport GX couple months ago and I want to change/convert my headlights to HID. I went to "option JDM" and ask them about it but the guy said he wasn't sure if it'll work due to how the 2011's are wired.
I'm pretty new to the whole after market modding scene so a lot of what he said I didn't understand. However I got quote for 180 dollars for the HID kit + install if all goes well and it works but if it doesn't I'll need a relay kit or something for 30 bucks? So I'm looking at 210 bucks for HID light + install.
I also want to change the day time lights to a "white" light, would that require a HID kit also?
Now the 2011 GX model dosen't come with fog lights but I can see the spot where the plastic cover is covering up the hole for the lights and it looks like its missing something. I got quote from Markham Mazda for 500 dollars + tax for fog lights and installation which I find pretty pricey. Is there another cheaper place to buy the fog lights + get them installed? I read about street performance up at woodbine, I'll go check it out one day.
One last question. Are HIDs to bright? I don't want to be pulled over by the cops and ticketed for having fog lights + HID at night.
Thanks.

Hids are an easy set up i got my lights as well from sp3gt, they are very simple to install, there are many walk throughs on here as well. for your white drls you could buy whiter bulbs or leds if you really wanted to ( i wouldnt go with the leds) as your drl is also your high beam so a whiter bulb would be the best way. euro light or something like that.
the reason why the lights are so expensive is because apart from including the lens itself, it also has the wiring and the new turn arms that go with the fog lights. i remember when i did mine the kit comes with both side arms (why im not really sure as the left is the only one that adds the fog lights) maybe it has something to do with the wiring. i am not too sure but on both arms they also add a silver trim ring :S again you may be able to do with the left side arm i dont know if you need need both but then again if you want them to match you will want both arms.
hope this helps!!

Thanks guys,
quick question for you azumi, did you change the lense on your fog to be yellow or just the bulb? I think the fog light kit at mazda comes default as white. I want the yellow one you got haha.

For the yellow fogs, you can buy yellow tinted bulbs, or yellow HID's. Most people would recommend HID's cause the yellow halogen bulbs don't seem to last very long. You can also apply a yellow tint to the fogs, which doesn't really make a difference in the light output colour.

You would change the temperature rating of the bulb, not the lens; yellow is a 3000K bulb.
What you want is H11 hid (low beam; what you use at night) and 9005 yellow bulbs (day time running light/high beam; the light that is always on until you turn on low beam).
For 2010+ it is simply plug and play for both h11 and 9005. You unscrew the bulbs and screw in the new ones, the only work required is for the hid ballast (i.e. find a spot to tape/screw them down; top of air filter is a good place).
In terms of price, hid kits are $70-$100 (see the sponsors section). Yellow bulbs are $20 for a pair (i.e. eurolite at nextmod).
Here are 2 pics, thanks to sp3GT for the 6000k HIDs and arctic white drl + install. Good price and great guy to deal with.
OEM fogs are next!

actually, it sort of does. I've got yellow x-pel film on my fogs and it does make the light fairly yellow. Obviously not as much as 3000k bulbs, but there's a definite yellow tint to the light
<--- see my avatar. those are stock halogens with the yellow film.

For people that have had the tinted bulbs, and say they didnt last long - it's probably because of an install error. Either they touched the bulb or the bulb scratched the housing. If done properly, the Nokya or Eurolite bulb can last just as long as any other.
I've had Nokya's and Eurolites installed in 5 of my last cars and all lasted for at least a year (if not longer) until I sold the car.
The yellow bulbs I purchased from Nextmod have been on for a year and a half so far (knock on wood)

always wipe your bulbs with alcohol wipes when you take them out or put them in, even if you are careful enough to not physically touch them.

This is pretty normal for any pressurized bulb (halogens, xenons, etc). Any oil which is left from your fingers can cause a difference in the heat gradient across the glass of the bulb, causing localized stress and ultimately failure (ie. the bulb cracks and/or explodes).
It's not a huge risk (no more so than say, your car battery exploding due to hydrogen gas discharge), but it does happen. If you want to get the most life out of your bulbs it doesn't hurt to spend the extra couple seconds of prep work.

Looks good man, i like the white DRLs, i want to swap mine for arctic white as well.
At the same time, i'm also in the loop for adding OEM style fogs on my GS trim (didnt add them...i regret it now)

9005 cannot produce white ouput for the Gen 1 07=-09's as they don't generate enough power.
