View Full Version : Weird metal dragging sound when turning.

I've never noticed this before, probably because I usually have my windows up or I'm blasting loud music. This morning me and my buddy where driving down his apartment's sheltered parking. He had his passenger window rolled all the way down, and he noticed some strange "tin can" or metal dragging noise, with a light "clunk" as I turned to slow down and park.

So I let my friend drive it around and sure enough, I can hear the dragging metal noise 20-30 feet away while he's turning and slowing down. The clunking sound comes up when the car makes for a corner. We parked the car and tried turning the wheel all the way to the left/right. There's a light clunking sound as we turn the wheel.. I'm not sure if that's supposed to be normal or not, but it didn't sound very normal to me.

And also I have this other inconsistent noise I've been hearing for more than 2 weeks now (sometimes its there, sometimes its not). When I rev my car up into a higher rpm, or whenever I'm accelerating.. some weird "chattering" or metal-chirping noise comes off from the front passenger side. I hear it the loudest when I'm turning right and accelerating out of a turn. It stops when I let go of the gas pedal. The noise sometimes comes out when I get going from a red light or a stop sign. Usually when I shift from 1st to 2nd, the metal chirping noise is there while I'm stepping on the gas pedal.

Do you guys think both of these noises are somehow related? I haven't done any mechanical mods to my car yet, all I have is an open mouth grill and tinted windows. My car is pretty much bone stock. It's a 2007 4dr GX, I got it used with 80k clicks from Mazda of Brampton.

I've done a bit of searching too, and this thread http://www.torontomazda3.ca/forum/showthread.php?52453-Clunking-sound-while-turning-corners-with-potholes has similar problems, but I'm still unsure of what's causing the problem. I just want to get an idea before I bring it to my dealer on monday.

Keep us posted. I have the same "loose metal to metal" noise coming from my front suspension. Even when I crank the engine, the vibrations from it results in the metal noise.

Could be a broken motor mount.................

Does the inside your wheels, meaning at the base of the rotors have lots of grease/oil on them ? If that's the case it might be one of your CV boot leaking grease which makes a weird sound when turning.

Definitely sounds like there is something loose but I can't quite pinpoint where its coming from the front.

I think it could be a broken motor mount too, I've hit a couple of nasty dips and potholes last week.. on my way to where I got my tints done.. shady-industrial-run down looking place is how you'd describe that plaza..

I haven't checked this yet.

How much did that cost you? :( I hope it doesn't come down to that.

I got my 3 check up done today at the dealership. The dragging/scraping metal noise I've been hearing while I turn was caused by a backing plate touching the rotor. It was a quick fix. After he readjusted it, we did another drive around and the noise was gone.

^On my drive back I didn't hear noise #2 either. But being an inconsistent noise as it is, I couldn't reproduce the same noise. I just left him to figure out what's causing the scraping metal sound. I'm going to be observing on my usual drive tomorrow if I hear the same noise again.

I have something like this right now as well. So here's the story, I was backing out of a driveway after dropping off my cousin and i didnt realize that the curb was so badly designed. As my front was begging to get off the end of the driveway the bottom scraped and broke the splash guard underneath (passenger side). Now when i make slight rights i hear this scraping sound as the plastic is now scraping against the ground. I went to get a quick fix and drilled holes and ziptied the piece back and yet its still making the sound but less pronounced, but its there. Does anyone know whats up? Thanks.
