View Full Version : Howling noise at approx 75km/h

Not sure if this is a problem or not, but when I drive there seems to be a howling noise (not too sure where from) that comes after I break 75km/h and seems to slowly die off when I approach 120km/h but not completely. Does anyone else experience this too? I could simply be paranoid because it's my first car and I dread the day something goes wrong, or is this an issue do you think?
Any feedback would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Yup. Aging cheap tires or possibly wheel bearing.

Bearing. Does it go away on corners?

wheel bearing, had the same issue recently.

Wish I had one of those in my trunk haha.
It's not there on corners cause I can't do a corner at 75km/h unless you're talking turning, cause if so, then no it doesn't go away while turning.

Im almost 100% that is a wheel bearing, very common issue. Does it need to be fixed right away? Probably not - I drove on my bad bearing for almost 3 months before I finally had time to get it fixed... but it is annoying, so sooner is better than later.
It's your tires... These cars cause the tires to wear different do to the camber at rear.. Cheap tires or not this will happen. My tires are not cheap ones and it happened to mine..

That is the worst advise anyone can give.. If it is wheel bearing it should be fixed right away:loco

The tires I have on were put on brand new by the dealership when I got it in December (so they are probably not the best). I'll figure out what tires they are and see if anyone here has heard of them. I'm also getting an oil change soon so I'm just gonna have the guy check out the bearings as well just to be safe. Appreciate the feedback.

+100% I had both my rear bearings go on my car (at different times).Exact symptoms as the OP described; Noise only at a certain speed, for me it was 70-90kph, above or below that no noise...Bad tires will almost always be noisy at all speeds.AND most times you can safely drive for awhile with a bad bearing as they are not in any danger of blowing apart or anything, but I would suggest, for safety sake, change them much sooner then later.

actually now that i think about it, it probably is the wheel bearings. I thought your car was newer for some reason. Changed them on my 04 put me back like 500 or 600 bucks. sux azz.

I managed to get mine done for 415, but yeah, its pricey. HOWEVER, at least a hundred of that was diagnostic, and it was done at a mazda dealer cus i was retarded back then.
Do yourself a favor and go to a garage (not mazda), bring the part with you (i.e. order it yourself and save another hundred bucks on commission) and tell them exactly what you want replaced.

Jimmy. $80 last time. You supply the part.
I am hesitant to recommend buying the Mazda Part as mine Factory replacement FAILED 14 months after DEALER installed it.
Personally, I would like to see someone offer a front bearing with a higher load rating. Mine was replaced last year. Go for quality in your replacement part for this item.

Only the 04's are pricey because there hub/bearing press in

Hmmm. I was rolling around today and I actually notice the noise does happen even at slower speeds, just not very much. So maybe it is the tires...

Curious, does this howling noise you are describing sound like 'white noise' that you would hear while sitting in an airplane in flight?

Not really. It's hard to describe. Best way to is imagining howling wind. Weird.

Wheel bearings do that too... mine was between 40km/hr- 110, over 115 I wouldn't notice it anymore. My friend's pontiac was only 30-70. If its your tire, you should be able to jack your car up, check your tire, and see something wrong with it (if its coming from a specific one). While you have your car jacked up, I think you may be able to ID the bad bearing by spinning your wheel, or by shaking it and checking how much free play there is. Compare your results with a 'good' wheel.

I hate to take this off topic but can I have more info on this or link to thread where it's discussed?
I wonder if this is my issue.
I got Falken ZE-912 last summer and it has been running fine. When I put them back on this spring (I swapped them out with winters) and rotated back to front I've noticed tire howling. Visually the wear on the rear tires seem okay (no crazy camber wear). I've got a '05 hatch, lowered with pro-kits, camber kit, rx-8 rims. Should I have NOT rotated my tires or do I need to get an alignment and get my camber back into spec?
I'm don't know of any threads but I have a 2008 Mazda 3 sedan and this happened to to sets if tires that I had.. Falkens on stock height and BFG when I lowered my car.. My sister inlaw has a 08 sedan and same with hers.. 2 sets of tires and hers is stock height

If you rotated them properly; straight front to back then I would suspect your camber may have gone out and you have a slight saw-tooth tread pattern now on the tires that were on the rear.Once you switch them to the front the noise would be very noticeable...Happened to me.Basically those that were on the rear are farked for front usage.Unfortunately.

ya, id say tires as well, what are you running? i had the same problem around 190 - 215km/h with a set i used to run

So I finally got this looked at. For anyone interested, or if your car is making a similar noise, it might just be tire wear. A tire rotation may/should fix.

holy shit that wolf got me howlin' at work, hahaha.
my car has the same problem, mechanic said the bearings checked out and it was probably just the tires.
i'm skeptical. there's an absolute constant hum@ 120 km/h and the sound goes in/out between 60-140.

Ya i get the same , i just leave it , its my right rear tire
If it's the bearing you would hear it when you are not on the gas (just coasting) and much lower then 75 KM.
From my experience shaking the tire doesn't always work, i had to take off both tires and spin the rotor by hand and listen for the crunching sound. If it's the tires, get them balanced and aligned, also if it's bad wear on the tire you just need to ride it out until the tire evens out
