My '05 Mazda3 with just over 110K is having this same problem where the auto transmission does not register "P" when the car is in Park and will not start until the car is put into neutral. The shifter is also very "sticky" and getting harder and harder to shift between gears. I've heard this is a common problem related to the cable becoming corroded at the shift pivot. I'd like to take a crack at lubricating this on my own instead of having it done, but not sure what to do. Does anyone have any instructions that I could use, or at least point me in the right direction? I'm not sure where the shifter pivot is located or what I should use to lube it. Is it accessed from under the car or from the engine compartment?
Any help appreciated!
thanks Marc.
