View Full Version : Rim Question

I posted this in the Exterior Styling area but got no response so I'm trying here because I think I posted this in the wrong section.

I just want to know if the Tenzo Type-M Version 2 Charcoal rims from Simply Tire are good rims to get? Im looking to get 18" rims for my Black Mica '06 Hatch. I read that people are bashing replicas, is this rim a replica or no? Just want to know if its worth me paying over $1000 for these rims.

Link - http://simplytire.com/tenzo.html - The very last rim on this page.

Thanks

I am looking for durability as well as light weight. My street is a dirt road (live in a forest) and there are a lot of bumps and potholes and stuff, Ill be driving at about 60kmh or so for just 0.5 km will these rims take this kind of abuse or will they bend? I want to keep them lightweight though because I am planning to take my car on a track this summer.

Also I am looking for tires as well, can anyone recommend good summer tires? I am looking for comfort, performance, and quiet tires for when I drive on the highway. I want them to last me at least 3-4 years as well. I have a mixed driving style (normally I drive calm, but there are those days where I turn into a "spirited" driver. My budget is $1800 - $2000 so if $1k goes to rims, I want the rest of the money to be well spent.

Also, is it better to go with 17" or 18"? Im looking for a nice aggressive look but I don't want it to look like too much is going on.

Tenzo Rs are heavy...

I believe the Tenzo Type R's are ~22 lbs per wheel, not a light wheel. Light weight wheels carry a premium price though, so you have to decide how important that is to you. Tenzo is a quality wheel manufacturer.
In terms of tires, I would take a look at the Hankook Ventus V12 or Continental Extreme DWS.

If you want a lightweight 18" wheel checkout this offering from simply:http://www.torontomazda3.ca/forum/showthread.php?51710-TSW-Interlagos-Rotary-Forged-Mazda-Fitment-17-and-18-quot-SimplyTire-2011

the person i got them from originally got them from simply tire. i have the 18x8 +45 rim size. bumpy or smooth has nothing to do with the rim but the weight of it affects the acceleration as well as braking distance. they are heavy too so gas consumption is going to be a little higher lol..come back to paloma :P

if you want lightweight + durable + black + 18", perhaps take a look at the TSW Interlagos. They're super light (forged - 18.8lbs I believe), very strong and reasonably priced (currently on sale for $1000).
I bought a set last week and so far am VERY happy with them. Allen and the guys are simply tire are excellent to deal with and I'd highly recommend them.

good luck with your search

How much do the stock 2006 Rims weigh? (17" Alloy) Im looking for something that either weighs the same or less. What rims should I look out for? (meaning ones i shouldn't buy) And I dont know much about tires, what should the size be if I want wider tires? Enough so that the tires just barely avoid the wheel well walls when i turn full lock. I will have to come take a look at your rims some time phil so i can decide if i want 18" or 17" people are saying 17" is fine but I kinda think there is too much rubber showing from the side and i feel like it has shopping cart wheels. Im on the fence between 17" and 18".

This is too small for me:

This is too much:

This is perfect! Nicely fits into the wheel well showing a good amount of rubber so it doesnt look like ur riding on rims.

I will be coming to la paloma a few times this summer. Had a lot going on lately that I had no time to even mod my car. Modding season is back so I'll be on top of my car adding more and more to it. Now everything kinda settled down, not much but enough to spend time working on my car. I will be adding rims, eyelids and blacked out reflectors from SecheMedia, Speedline 3pc Splitter, 6000k HIDs and a short ram intake. I'll probably lower my car in 2012 in the spring. After all that, I should be more active on these forums and car meets. Feel like a little guy coming to the meets with only an aftermarket exhaust and grill when everyone has gone all out with rims, lights, lowered suspension, etc. lol I know thucs been going to them every now and then so I'll come one day with him.

Anyways back to the rims...

This is basically the style im looking for Rim wise:

Not too busy but aggressive looking Gunmetal/Charcoal/Machined black coloured rims.

You want 225/40R18 for your setup then, probably.

Hmmmmmm those look really nice. Would they survive on my street? Its all bumpy and I do have to drive for quite a bit till i get to a paved road. Are these just as strong as the Tenzos i picked?

Ok so if the OEM 17" rims are 21.1 lbs and the 18" Tenzos are 23 lbs, there will be a 7.6 lb increase when I install all 4 onto my car, will i even notice a difference in handling and gas consumption? If I get the 17" Tenzos It will be 8.4 lb decrease in weight. im like 60% for 17" now but im still un easy about how much rubber is showing.

Old (about a decade ago) TSW rims were kind of soft, by my understanding. BUT I've only read good things about their recent offerings... So it should hold up just fine - it is also a rotary-forged rim rather than cast, which helps.

Honestly, unless you're taking your car to autocross, I wouldn't worry too much about rim weight. You may notice slight changes in acceleration and braking, but IMHO nothing worth making a fuss over.

Disclaimer: This is coming from the guy running OEM 2011 MS3 rims, which are heavy as frak. :P

Is 18x8 +40 a bad fitment for my Mazda 3? What will happen? I want to get Enkei Ammodos installed and Allen is telling me its probably not a good idea, I can deal with a little bit of rub if its not too bad. I dont understand what the Offset is really... Can anyone tell me why +40 isnt good for mazda 3s?

Is 18x8 +40 a bad fitment for my Mazda 3? What will happen?

The offset of a rim is the distance from the hub to the center line of the rim. so if you have an 8" rim, the center line is going to be 4" from the inside lip and 4" from the outside lip. Because offset is measured from the center line, the width of the rim matters a lot when making your decision.

An offset of +40 means that the hub sits 40mm off of the center line towards the outside lip of the rim. A -40 offset would put the hub 40mm closer to the inside lip of the rim.

I think 18x8 +45 is basically the limits of fitment without other modifications to your car. At 18x8 +45, it's pretty much a 50/50 chance that you'll experience rubbing. If it was 18x7 +40, that might fit... but you run out of room to play when you step up to 8"+ rims.

in the end, it all comes down to what you like.

not all of us can afford to drop $2k+ on a set of Rays/Volks/BBS/whatever wheels.
