Hey,
So my friend has an 04 2.3L 3 hatch with 169000km on it. She was loosing oil and i told her to have it looked at.
anyway she took it in today and they said there was a hole in the engine and her options were to get a new engine or new car.
are there no other options for this. I went and saw the car, i don't imagine the hole is that large because it doesn't leave spots where its parked.
can the hole not be plugged?
is mazda not responsible for something on such a low km car?
Plus how could this hole get there? rust?
cheers

Too many possibilities to answer your questions. Get a 2nd opinion from another garage that you can trust.

169,000km and you want Mazda to warranty?
16,.900 is low KM
170,000 is not

I can see an 04 with 169,000km, but not with 16,900km. Did you mean 69,000km instead? Even so, I think the engine is still out of warranty because it's 5 years or 100,000km, whichever comes first.
Your friend needs to go to a trusted mechanic like Jimmy at Street Performance for a 2nd opinion.

above is what i said as well, just thought i'd check that's all
i still think 169k isn't high enough to justify a hole

Did she buy it new? Extended Powertrain warranty?
Couldn't you just buy a replacement block from a salvager? and not necessarily a whole new motor

Yeh. I think we need a better description of this "hole". Cracked block? Over-tightened oil filter cap? How do you know the engine was losing oil? How long was this going on for? Was she driving around with no oil for an extended period?

what do you mean it has a hole? if you have a hole in the engine block she wouldn't/shouldn't be driving it, and if she is than it will blow very soon due to water/rocks/debris. The blocks are made of aluminum, aluminum doesnt rust

how has she maintained the car? Are they maybe referring to the oil filter housing leaking maybe? They used cheap plastic housings back then and later offered the conversion kits

It ain't so funny when you have to pay to fix it.
Been there, done that.
Twice.
Well, four times if you count rods instead of engines.
