Hello everyone,

In the past 6 months, I have made couple threads regarding my 4spd automatic transmission in my 2007 Mazda 3 sedan with 2.0L.

Sometimes, I get this annoying jerk when I accelerate, either rolling off a stop sign or accelerating from a red light. The jerk can be reproduced easier when accelerating moderately on hills/inclines.

The jerk is driving my crazy, and the fact that I have not been able to

1) fix it
2) find relevant data on google or tm3
3) find a remedy to help fix it

is really driving me crazy.

I love the car, I enjoy the forum and respect how users are very friendly and helpful, but I need to know if I can keep this car or if I need to fix something before I lose all. It feels like a ticking time bomb. Dealers have been unable to do anything and don't know what the issue is. Car has ~ 98,900km and still has about 8 months of warranty/1100km left.

Is there anyone out there, specifically with the 4spd auto-tranny that is willing to drive my car and maybe give their input on the issue? The gratitude is magnificent.

I am willing to drive to the person's place or near the area.

Hope someone can help a fellow TM3er.

Regards,

zmz3

i have a 4spd but i only experience the jerk first thing in the morning when i drive it. my only idea is that the tranny needs a reflash..have you done that yet?

Ok well I'm no expert, but i used to have a 4spd and never had this problem... but more info about the 'jerk' would help.
Does it seem to be transmission related? (i.e. occurs when the gear shifts, or is it like a power surge/stall)
If its transmission related, I presume you've checked your transmission fluid right? If its power related, have you tried resetting your ECU to see if it makes a diff?

Hey Phil,

The jerk in the morning does happen and it goes away after 5min of warm up. However, this jerk is definately more noticelable and can happen even after 6 hours of driving.

I have done ECU, tranny, (all that is possible) re-flashing by Mazda dealership. No fix.

Tranny was flushed at 84,000km. The issue was present before the flush as well.

It certainly feels like a tranmission problem.

The issue doesnt happen all the time, but I can reproduce it about half of the time.

Today, I was on 14th and woodbine (saw phil at the lights - I was purple Mazda) and because of road construction, I had to slow down all the way to like 10km/h, after that I gave the car moderate acceleration and then as it shifts from 1st to 2nd, the jerk is very noticeable. Almost like someone is using manual mode and shifting at the wrong times.

*the problem occurs when the tranny shifts from 1st to 2nd* about 80% of the issue occurance, and sometimes it's slightly noticeable at 2nd-3rd gear shift. Not as much as 1st-2nd.

sounds like your tranny is slipping..although i could be wrong. is the tranny under warranty or no?

Yeah. The tranmission/powertrain has 100,000km/5 year. My mileage is 99,800km, and it expires on March 2012 if I am not mistaken. Mazda dealership says it's normal for 4spd tranny.

You were on woodbine, coming from Jimmy's side. Can't recall the time. I was on 14th heading east passing woodbine.

normal operation is a smooth acceleration. not jerking...the dealership that told you it's normal might have some screws loose. you drive my 05 and you will notice that i have no jerks. That is normal.

Yeah, but QEW Mazda seems to think otherwise. they went twice, and they saw the issue and said it was normal.

sigh

are you willing to drive my car?

Gear engagement is very quick actually. and this annoying jerk between 1st and 2nd, happens intermittently :( but I can reproduce it with couple tries. And easier to reproduce on hills/inclines.

Next Thursday?

It happens with triptronic? or full auto? Is the jerk almost like your transmission is not fastened properly to the car? (best description i can think of)

Yeah, it happens in Full Auto for me. Ironically, I rarely use tiptronic... hmmm..

PM'd.

Thank you Phil for your help.

If anyone has any additional input or comments, please shoot away.

It is actually possible that I am the only one in this forum with this issue? o.O I have read almost every tranny thread, nothing mentions what I notice. :(

If I take it to Jimmy and then he does notice the same issue I have.

Can his case improve my chances of getting a Mazda dealership to repair/fix/re-build the transmission?

Warranty valid till march 2012
current mileage: 98,800km approx

I recently had an issue with jerky transmission between 1-2 and 3-4, had mazda replace my transmission. 2007 hatchback 92k. the warranty is til 100k/5yrs whichever comes later or first? you may just have 1200 clicks til it's out, if i remember correctly...

If Jimmy can come up with a diagnosis, you can go to the dealer and tell them what to look for and needs fixing.

Otherwise, you're just going in there asking them to find/replicate the issue and to find a possible fix. They sometimes cannot replicate the issue and will tell you its normal.

Hey,

did mazda rebuild your transmission? or did they bring in a used one?

and yes, i have less than 1200 clicks left!!!

Thanks

Well,

The Mazda dealership did notice the issue but they said its normal. However, I really don't think it's normal.

I will have Jimmy look at it.

Thank you

Get it looked at ASAP, and make sure you have some kind of paperwork from the dealers you went to 'telling you its normal' so if/when you roll out of warranty and your tranny craps itself you've got something left to fight with.

Have the dealership put it in writing so you have it doucumented before your warranty expired. Keep a copy.

Hi everyone,

I went to Jimmy earlier yesterday and after 1 hour of test drives, code reading, mechanical inspection on hoist, he determined

1) the car doesn't exactly always jerk, but he is calling the jerk a 'rough shift'. He asked if tranny oil has been flushed, and I said yes. He saw that the pan was dropped, and he complimented the sealing job, no leaks whatsoever. Of course, while test driving, the jerk only happened like 3-4 times out of the 20 times we tried to reproduce it. And that's the problem, the issue happens randomly, and you have a better chance on inclines/hills. However, sometimes, the jerk/rough shift can happen 5 times in a row. None the less, he said Mazda will in no chance warranty this because to them, the only way, is for it to happen a lot more often.

2) car threw no codes
3) transmission mount and related parts are in place and no sign of loose parts.

I have made note of the dealerships that refused to do any work earlier, and now I really have no choice other than driving the car, bending over and letting the warranty expire.

I will do drain and fills every 25-35k kms, as per Jimmys recommendations.

Thank you to all those who helped and gave input.

Regards,

at this point, take a day off or two in the super near future, and try as many mazda dealerships as possible and see if they will warranty your problem.
you're running out of km's and time.

A day or two off to possibly fix an issue that will cost you $1000-1500 is worth it (I suppose that depends on how much you make of course).

Start going now, Mazda says 100k, but some members on this board have gotten warranty issues fixed when they were slightly out of warranty (over by like 2000 km). Depends on if the dealer will work with you and do you a favor.

I am inclined to agree with Phil's earlier suggestion. Seems very similar to the issues I had prior to re-flashing the ECU on my old 04 Sedan. Post flash the issue was not as present but still occurred on occasion.

Hey Ami,

The issue doesn't happen as often, but it certainly happens every now and then. You are thinking this is normal operation for the 4spd auto?

unfortunately, it does seem that way. Many members with the 4 speed auto experience some shift shock issues. It usually manifests as a slight jerk when the car is shifting up. I recall it being almost as if the car could not decide to stay in current gear, or go up one.
