View Full Version : O2 sensor replacement already?

I have an 08 Mazda 3 with 58,000 kms on it and the CEL came on about a week ago. I just had it checked and was told that it's the front O2 sensor that needs replacing.
I found it kind of odd cuz I've never owned a car where the O2 needed replacing so soon especially at only 58K, so I asked if it was under warranty, but the dealer said it's not. They quoted me $411 labour included. I just feel like an O2 isn't something I should have to replace so soon and is kind of upsetting. Any suggestions?

My first car was a Tiburon and bought it brand new and packed up a day later and hit the highway about 300km on the road i had a CEL come on and it turned out a blown o2 sensor, so can happen at any time I would think , but that is alot of bones for a sensor and labour :(

When was the car purchased? You are definitely under the mileage amount (80k). You might be over the 3 year mark. Still I would push for it.

Depending on the actual in service date of the car. It's possible that it could be past the 3 years. Mine is coming up soon and I only have less than 70,000km.

Exactly but if it is over it must be just over and they could throw him a bone.

It was purchased sometime end of April - early May of 08, so it's about 4 months past the 3 years. Is this something I can bring up with their head office to push for it?

I doubt it. They will just probably tell you that you should have bought the extended warranty. It never hurts to try though, especially if you have done all of your services at that dealership.

Get the part from an Affiliate dealership to save $$ and have a non-dealership mechanic install it for you. You will probably save close to 50%.

Does not the O2 sensor come under 'Emissions-warranty'? So it should be covered till 5 years~100k? ...and it IS unusual for a O2 sensor to go at your mileage but there are sometimes reasons for it i.e; too much idling time, use of bad (unclean) gas consistantly over time etc;

Not a sensor, converter would be covered.

I don't think he is eligible but don't quote me on that. This is what I could find.

Air/Fuel Metering System - 24months/38,400km

• Closed loop system
- Oxygen sensor

as per pg 27 http://www.mazda.ca/files/2005_warranty_eng.pdf

Maybe I read that wrong but it doesn't make sense since the main warranty is 36/80k. :S

Only up to a certain amount though as well?

Thanks for all the input guys. Much appreciated. I might just buy the O2 sensor at a dealership and get it installed elsewhere. Does anyone know how much the sensor costs? Also, how long does it take to install?

Mazda has followed the domestics errors...that O2 sensor should never have failed, mine went at about 70 thou. Your front struts will be failing in the near future soon. My favourite car company has let me down big time.

Would anyone know if the pre cat sensor is the same as the one after?

Every car is different. I am over 100k and still on my stock struts. I know people who are over 150k. Don't go by what everyone says. Just make yourself aware of certain things to be aware of.

+1, I'm hitting 165k, original shocks/struts and I've been riding on Pro-kits since like 30k or earlier, can't remember.Trick is to avoid pot-holes, sewers and slow down on rough roads...works for me!

That could be just me I will admit, if you drive as most people they should last longer. If you attack on and off ramps and bounce off the red line a lot, then the life will be greatly diminished.

I have an 07 Mazda 3 Gt and my O2 Sensor went at about 55000km. I paid about $200.00 to get it done at a local shop. Don't pay the $400.00+, it's too expensive.

Oh sorry, forgot to add; Still on all original sensors, but then I never use crap gas (Shell gas only) or let the car idle too long.

buy it from the dealer (see list here for ones that give discounts) or get an NGK or denso aftermarket replacement... basically same as the original

redline918

Because it is not an american connection which runs between like 150 to 175, they say its a canadian connection and are telling me that the one i need is 460 just for the sensor. thats why i am here hoping to find one cheaper.

I don't know where you were shopping because what they're telling you is clearly wrong
both the US and Canadian O2 sensors are the exact same... if you don't believe me, call your mazda dealer up and ask them
the only "special" O2 sensor the 06 has is in the Californian version... I guess it shows up as "CA" on their computers? CA=California

EDIT: Just looked at NGK's online catalog... they do make a California emissions O2 sensor for the 06, but that is not what you need... their listings are also very confusing (grammar fail), but it says "EXC. Calif & Canada"... but that's not what they really mean because what they are trying to say is "except california, canada", in other words US Federal emissions AND Canada... confused yet? you need NGK stock # 24355!
Denso's listing is more sane and the Denso sensor you need is 234-5015... Denso made the original sensor in your car

Thank you. I found one denso with the proper connection but it's 400 dollars which I can't belive an O2 sensor costs that much

Hi there, I am new to forum's and I hope you guys don't mind if I ask for some answers here. I've had a front end accident a few months ago in the spring, and I have been running my car over the summer with my engine light on (I know it even pains me to think of it) but I am sure that the problem has led to an O2 sensor replacement, and probably the purge valve solenoid. I've researched, thought about the issue, and got it diagnosed and am pretty sure that those two parts are the issue (now all I can do is hope). Could I get some info on the location of the front O2 sensors (I hear my car has 4 O2 sensors....), the best one to buy since I do not want to be cheap about these types of things but I do not want to break the bank either (I am seeing Bosch is not worthwhile and NGK would be good but i'm looking at spending $400??).

I have my own tools and garage, I just need to know the best route to approach this issue at. I need to know the location of the parts (O2 sensor/ Purge valve solenoid) and the best link/place to find the best quality parts for the best price. Any links to videos or posts would be greatly appreciated, I'm sorry if I sound needy I am just very tired of surfing the internet. These mazda 3's don't have many instrumental videos to go off of! I'm going to be checking the manual for the location of the O2 sensor but I was hoping I could see a direct youtube video or something like that so I could jump right on the project.

Any replies would be greatly appreciated! thank you!!

Whoever said your car has 4 sensors is retarded.
It has 2, upstream and downstream. Rockauto is your best bet?
