View Full Version : Broken gas cap wtf?

Sooo yesterday after running around I see that I am pretty much empty and have 10kms "remaining" before I am totally empty so I head to the gas station to tank up. Then when I get there and am trying to take my gas cap off you literally could not PAY me to get the damn thing off. I was trying soooo hard and it wouldn’t budge...

OF course I start panicking thinking that if I can't get it off I am screwed cus I have no gas to take the car anywhere. Then with my last ounce of strength and patience i finally think I have it... but no, the whole top of the gas cap snaps off and is then in my hand... at this point I am furious and thinking "wtf kind of pos is this!", I am able to get the white part out of the hole and tank some gas.

Enraged at that point I start driving to the Ajax Mazda dealer as it's the one I go to all the time. The "manager" tells me that is wont be covered cus I am 10k out of warranty so I have to pay up.... then he tells me it is going to cost me $56 for a new one... and that's WITH the "discount" of 10% they gave me....

I am still really mad about it but what can I do. He told me that sometimes when you go to full serve gas stations they cross thread the cap and ream it on. But I tanked last Friday and I know that is not the case at all. And I looked at it after, there were no "markings" that he mentioned would be there after reaming it on. I am telling you it was like vacuumed on, which I know happens. It happened once before to me but Mat got it off.

Has this happened to anyone before? OR had a hard time getting if off? or am I the only one?

Oh btw that manager guy claims he is going to try to get mazda to pay for it... we'll see what happens with that but let's just say I am not holding my breath.

FML :bang

Wow, next happened to me before. Sorry to hear. I didnt think gas caps were breakable lol. Good luck with the situation. Hopefully he really does make an attempt to put this claim through to mazda and get it covered by them for you

I think this ended up being a recall a while back

Not an actual recall just a TSB. Updated design on the caps. Main issue is people over tightening the caps. One click and you're good.

We just had this happen on our 2008 mazda 5 gt.... thankfully it went through under MAP so we didn't have to pay out of pocket for something known to commonly be an issue

Me too... not the most convenient breakdown....

Only discovered when the tank needs gas.

Does being near empty contribute to this condition?

Could it be a greater vacuum exists when a tank is sucked dry?

Hopefully with the TSB and revised cap it is addressed and that you don't end up with the old style cap and have this happen again.

Sorry to hear of your situation.

there's no way to get the old style caps... any old stock has been sent back to mazda and scrapped
this is a very common problem with 08s... seen many broken caps

the caps that were recalled were the cx7/mpv ones that caused evap codes

Crappy deal. Hope you get a new cap at a decent price.
Happy Bday

Threadjack:
If i have an 08.5 under warranty, could I get a new cap as a preventative measure?

you'll need to break it first ;)
