View Full Version : Gas tank doesn't go full sometimes on a '10 GT?

Hey Tm3,
I went to fill up my gas tank again today because it was nearing empty and i would need to make a long trip later (about 80kms left on the display).
I went to fill it up and i would stop when the nozzle makes the click sound.
However, when i was back in my car i notice that the fuel gauge is not completely full (missing one square from being full)
I've read in another thread about some 3s fill full at varying volumes from empty.
But they haven't mentioned that their car doesn't display a full tank.
This is the second time this happend, other times my car would show full tank. I've been using the same gas station since i got my car
Any ideas?

Could be a pump issue as well, I've had this happen once before too. never since or prior.

Yeah you can normally always squeeze a little extra in the tank, I found that some pumps depending on the pressure will kick out with too much pressure alone, I usually judge by liters, so I have a 2010 speed has a 50L tank so if I'm down under 100km range left I know I can get 50L + in it so if it starts kicking out around 46-47L mark you can pull back the nozzle a little and squeeze about half the pressure and get a few extra liters past 50 in :)

I have a 2010 speed has a 50L tank
FYI, the 2010 Mazdaspeed3 (as well as any Mazda3 with a 2.5L engine) has a 60 litre tank. The light just comes on stupidly early.
From what I've seen in my MZ3, the light comes on with 15L remaining, and the final fuel bar disappears with 10L remaining in the tank.

keep squeezing that pump! listen to the gas going in, and judge before it overflows out ur tank. haha :D no but seriously, once the pressure stopped the gas 3/4 of the way. repressed it and it filled it right up after.
Next time your pumping gas and it stops.. Pull the nozzle out a bit.

Thanks for all the replies guys :D
It was odd when i look up and saw how little i had to pay for the gas <--that never happens!!! :bang

How many bars are there.. that has to be one finicky gauge if it's going to notice not even an extra liter in the tank.

When i started this thread it was the second time it happened.
It was missing one "square" from being full
I didn't try to pump an extra liter in there, but since i'm almost out
Hopefully this time it goes full

Hi! just got a 2010 GS sedan with 54k Kms on it. I've only had it for two weeks and the gas tank would not fill up either. It stops at 11 bars. Since it is still under warranty, brought it to dealer and they replaced the fuel signal unit. Got it today and the tank still won't fill up. Self testy end 45 litres so I had to press gas trigger a few more times to get 10 litres. As I understand the sedan has 55 litres. Any idea what's happening?

Somewhat of a thread jack :
My 2010 2.0 loses 1 fuel bar at around 40 km. I usually fill up when I have 1 bar remaining because I assume that my car can only go 40 km from that point.
Is it true my car can run on 0 squares? That I can get another 40 km average when my last bar disappears?
Thanks

maybe, but why would you want to? all your gonna be doing is putting more stress on the fuel pump if you always run the car near bone dry.

This has been discussed many times on the forum.

You can get more than go more than 40km even with no bars, any more I'm not sure but you can get at least that much if not more. I wouldnt risk it though. Any gunk in the fuel tank will settle on the bottom if you let it go bone dry.
There is around 10-15L in reserve either way though so you would never fill to the max of 55L.
To the OP's points though, I've had one instance where I filled up to full and there was 1 bar unlit. Pump issue though nothing to do with the car.

Tried 5 different pumps, no deal. :(

As stated a few times already in this thread, unless you are running to dry, even with 0 bars left you will not fill up to 55L's. On the mz3 there is 10-15L in reserve even with the light on (1 bar left).

Dynames, so I should not expect that the 12th bar should light up?

I understand the 15 liter or so reserve. I am just trying to figure out why my 12th bar would not light up because the pumps stop at 11th. The last bar light up only if I pump more. From my research it might be the carbon canister in the EVAP or the fuel neck.

After filling up to full and noticing that the 12th bar isnt lit, have you ever tried turning off the car and turning it back on to see if it will light up?

Yep, tried that and also turning it n with gas cap off a few times (air might be trapped). No go. Just got it from dealer, after changing the fuel signal unit, they reset PCM. It filled up with twelve bars. We'll see what happens after a few fill ups. :)

Still no luck. 11 bars and stopping. Will probably leave it that way.

I pump my gas very slowly. Gets more volume and less fumes. Don't quote me. But when I put it in slowly to the click I always go over the full mark on my 05.if I pull it full throttle I just get full.

Not sure if that really does anything but whatever works I guess. I usually set my limit to $60 and let the pump computer automatically slow down to the last cent.

it could be in all our heads haha. I think ive posted here but i always go to the second click, to try and keep a constant. I like to use petro canada gas, but i find that some pumps are better. When i fill up in Ingersoll at the petro, i feel like i get more than gas by the second click, whereas in Kitchener, at petro, one i usually use seems to fill up less, but that could be something like 2 different pumps.

+1.

Yorkdale Dufferin Mazda finally traced the culprit. They said that the gas tank got dented by a rock somehow. They removed the shield / plates and saw the tank. Because of the dent, tank does not take the full capacity unless you put in 10 litres more. Hmmm...

I actually doubt it myself but am not sweating it anymore as I got it 2nd hand and not worth my time. Looking back, I should have asked them to take a pic. :)

FYI
NO cars have accurate fuel gauge.
If you fill to brim, float stuck at top, and needle doesn't move from F.
When fuel up to half of floater height, its already showing E.
Finally, even though there are baffles, IT IS affected by hills and lateral G.
I've never seen a car which didn't have this.
Also, dont forget evap. In summer you get more fumes from filter to drive on.
