Does anyone here change their engine oil with a thicker viscosity for cold winter temperatures? Just curious if a thicker engine oil will perform much better in the winter.
Your not supoosed to put thicker oil for winter...thinner oil is used for colder tempatures but really their is no need to worry about it

Correct...thinner oil and not required to be any thinner in the 3

Thicker oil is definitely not recommended for winter use!! Best bet is to use the recommended grade called for your particular engine, but use a high quality synthetic oil...Synthetic flows much better during 'cold' starts thus protecting your engine better.

You are safe to stick with the factory recommended 5W20 or 0W20, depending on the year of your car. Synthetic oils definitely flow/pump noticeably faster at low temperatures - a few winters in Thunder Bay proved that to my satisfaction.
mazda 0w20 is $4 something a bottle from the dealer (with tm3 discount).

Sounds Good. I'll stick with the recommended grade and I agree that a good synthetic oil is a must. Thanks.
Has anyone have an experience with Royal Purple?

I've used royal purple ... I prefer castrol syntec... I wait till it goes on sale at crappy tire and then I buy 4 jugs (4.4L) each time

I agree with Castrol syntec. I had that on my 330ci and the engine felt really smooth.

synthetic (dino based iirc) as someone mentioned.
if anyone cares, it actually comes from idemitsu and is bottled by petro-canada. you can pickup honda/acura 0W20 and its pretty much the same thing, aside from a different bottle.

For most Castrols, sure... Should note that German Castrol (ie. Castrol Syntec 0W30) is the exception to the rule.
It's the only true Group IV "full synthetic" oil in the Syntec line, and is manufactured in Germany (hence the moniker)... The rest of the line-up is American-made Group III crap.
German Castrol has been the subject of many rave reviews and UOAs on BITOG.

i use 5W20 all year round. when i start having a bit of oil burning i might go 5W20 winter and 5W30 summer. but no need to worry about anything like that just yet. cheap canadian castrol edge. either in the the black bottle or gold bottle. might look into my other options later.
