Well here goes.

I have an '05 Mazda3 2.3L 5spd. At 96K my motor blew (regular maintenance etc, etc). Replaced crank and No. 1 piston assembly. After getting everything back in car, will not start.

1. Engine turns over by hand easily with a 3/8" ratchet.
2. Wiring harness was compared and is connected the same as another identical 3.
3. Starter rebuilt.
4. All grounds checked with a meter.
5. Battery replaced.

The fuel relay is active and pressurizes the system. The neutral safety switch works as the starter "clicks" but will not turn the vehicle over. There appears to be a draw because when I hook up the terminals to the battery there is a significant spark (key on/off makes no difference).

Mazda Canada has all but told me to bend over and grit my teeth. I love the car but this is making it very difficult for me to provide a favourable testimonial for Mazda. I live in Sudbury, ON so any suggestions other than Jimmy (who would have had this a long time ago if I were closer) would be appreciated.

This could be so many things, did you do a compression test after installing the piston and crank? I'm assuming you bent a rod or spun a bearing? Think simple, compression, spark, fuel. I would start at compression, spark than fuel (easiest to hardest).

sol_searchin: I did spin a bearing, however, the engine will not turn over with the starter at all. The engine turns over fine with a 3/8" ratchet.

TheMan: Thanks for the link. I'll try this out over the weekend and will post results.
