Hey members,
My friend has a 2011 Mazda3 GT Sedan. He was taking a corner hit a puddle and his ABS kicked in, after that he was unable to steer (steering wheel locked) and went into a curb. There's nothing leaking under, and to me it seems like his power steering pump might have failed when his ABS kicked in. I took a look and his entire driver side front suspension, wheel, and axle are gone for sure. I was reading the forums for any recalls on his ABS. Does anyone know of any similar problems from other 2011's?

Sounds like he was going too fast. No amount of ABS is going to help you when you hydroplane.

I haven't heard of any issues with the PS or the ABS. That's odd his PS would have failed with the ABS kicked in as it's designed to still work for that exact reason.

Hopefully the repair doesn't get too expensive.

I was thinking the exact same thing, but he said he couldn't turn his wheel at all and went straight into the curb :( He's lucky that atleast onyl dmg is to driver side front wheel area. But it's all got to be replaced :bang

ABS won't kick in unless you hit the breaks...like Ryan said, he was probably going too fast and just couldn't control the car. Was he turning left or right? How did he hit a curb with the front driver side of the car? Did he hit a centre divide or something?

ABS will "kick in" if he has DSC and the car senses loss of traction

This may be a dumb question.. but was he driving manual? If he stalled would the PS not work as well??

you cant really stall while moving unless u lock the wheels and skid, but then the wheels would just rebump start the engine, and if u were somehow skidding and stalled at the same time (unlikely), the PS wouldnt work as the engine is not spinning to create the power steering.

Probably doesn't help much but the only time steering ever locked out for me while driving was my old Camry. I was driving on the 407 about to exit and hit an uneven patch of snow while slightly turning. Started to spin and thankfully didn't hit anything but after spinning 180 degrees, I couldn't move the steering wheel. Shut off the car and start it again fixed it. Something similar might have happened but hard to say.
