View Full Version : Lifters? Any suggestions welcome...
2008.5 M3 2.3 liter (however, also heard this on my 2006 M3 2.0 liter).
On colder days, when engine has not warmed up, I hear a noise from the engine. Hard to describe outside of a 'throtttttttt' sound (can't really say grinding). Most noticeable when RPM's are low and/or going up hills. Again, most prominent when engine is cold...The sound itself is not loud, but definitely noticeable.
Any ideas??

Any way for you to upload a video? Thats the best way for anyone to get a idea of what the noise is. Especially when it is hard to describe in words.

VVT actuator noise
http://www.protegefaq.net/tsb/01-043-07.html
that is an outdated TSB but it has since been updated to cover non-mazdaspeeds also... do not use it, but it is good info/guideline for what is happening
Thank you, I will look into this.
As for a video...it's difficult as you h ave to be driving to hear it. Again, it's when you accelerate slowly (and RPM's are low (( 1.5-2)). The noise (almost like a rattle/grind type sound) is not loud, and it really only noticeable above the regular engine noise when listening for it. Again, after the engine is warm is all but disappears. Very noticeable when going up hills or gentle accelerating when engine is cold....
In case the helps, my 2008.5 GT 2.3 liter engine is automatic...

yes, it's the VVT actuator making the noise... take it in to the dealer to get it fixed if you still have warranty
it's a very expensive fix otherwise
With only 24 000 kms. on it??
My 3 year warranty may be up...what would I be looking at for costs??

mileage doesn't matter... this is a common problem, which is why mazda issued the bulletin in the first place
probably over $1000 out of pocket
you better check your owner's manual on the warranty.... it might be covered under powertrain warranty
Looking in Owner's Manual...can't seem to locate information about VVT actuators and if they are covered under powertrain....
So my question is...will the 5 year POWERTRAIN warranty I have cover the VVT actuator repair/service??
So again, will this be covered under my power train warranty? It does mention the mazda 6 w. 2.3 liter engine, so should I assume the Mazda 3 with same engine (2.3)?

DESCRIPTION
When the engine is first started, some vehicles may exhibit a loud ticking noise from the variable valve timing
(VVT) (A). This is caused by the lock pin of the variable valve timing actuator not fully engaging or from a worn
lock pin hole. Heat treatment has now been added around the hole of the variable valve timing rotor lock pin to
prevent this from happening

it is part of the engine internals, so probably it will be covered by powertrain warranty
Thank u sooooo much...I can worry a bit less...:)

forgive my idiocity, but the vins that fall under the category ARE the ones that need to be adressed, or were ones that dont have the issue?
