Wicked tires! No comparison for you but from everything I've read you will be very happy. I used to use Nokian winters exclusivelyuntil this last set, I decided to try the Gislaved Nordfrost 5's as they are similar. Saved a few bucks.

Let it snow!

I believe those tires pictured are both Hak 5s or Rs, one studded , one not. The 7s have a completely new and different pattern.

I have the "R"'s and they have a different pattern. I don't think you'll have any issues with the 7's.

looks like without the centre channel - the water / slush will disperse to the sides faster giving more "tire-toroad" contact

Except with the LAW! From my readings the 7s are studded tires (I may have missed something) but if so (studded) they are illegal in Ontario. Anyone would be well enough off, with the Rs~ Excellent tire, better roll resistence then the 7 also.

Studded tires may be used between October 15 and May 1 on commercial vehicles whose total loaded mass does not exceed 3000 kg and on passenger vehicles and taxis, provided these vehicles have studded tires on both ends of an axle and, if they have studded tires on the wheels of the front axle, provided they also have them on the wheels of the rear axle.

The 7 has option for studded or not. I bought the one without stud. Bcuz I go to Ontario quite often. But it's legal over here

Thats weird because they don't mention that on their site, (that I saw). Anyways what was the cost for those tires?

I'll stick with the R's for that $$$$$$$$$$.

BTW, w had snow on the roads in and around my house last night and this morning, and the R's are just like i hoped, predictable and comfortable.

The old Hakk5/R is a great winter tire. I used to drive them exclusively, but could only find them at Kal Tire. No experience on the Hakk7.

However, see pic below of Hakk5 and another really good winter tire that is significantly less expensive. Notice any similiarity? Also, performance is pretty much identical too.

The lower picture is the Hankook W409 iPike. Pretty much the same winter snow and ice performance as a Hakk5 without the price tag.

Not trying to be argumentative but; Similar is not quite the same as being the same. I see quite a difference in thread design between the two plus compounds, belts and sidewall technology may be quite different...There has to be a reason Hakks have had a reputation for decades of being some of the best winter tires money can buy.

They're totally 2 different tires...
look at all the details, not even the same size of threads

I wasn't trying to imply that the tires are identical in every respect. Just that the tread pattern of the iPike and the Hakk's are very similiar and that the iPike's are essentially Hankooks attempt to clone the Hakk's. From having driven both tires extensively, I can tell you that the performance difference is neglibible between the tires. The Hakk's may have a very slight edge in deep snow and ice as they are a softer compound and sidewall, but really, there is little performance difference between them and for the money, the hakk's are overpriced. Keep in mind I am saying this as someone who would only buy Hakk's in the past for his cars...

I didn't say they were the same. I asked if anyone noted any similarities.

As for reputation, Hakks have been around for ages and were the golden standard for winter tires when there wasn't quite the market for them as there is now. You could make an argument that the Hakks still are the best in the business and maybe that is true. I haven't driven or tested any of their recent offerings so I can't give an opinion on their current merit.

However, this said, like most industries, their competition and winter tire technology and industry investment, has most definitely caught-up and the gap between the better winter tires isn't what it used to be. Hakks used to be miles better than everything else out there. The truth is, you can now get the same performance from much cheaper alternatives and not have to pay the premium for the name and reputation. Think of it like buying a Sony Television. Sony doesn't even make their T.V.'s anymore, but they still charge a premium on them because a lot of people are attracted just to the Sony namebrand and reputation. Just an example.

Sure sounded to me like you were implying they were the same and in performance also (read your last comment again). Also when using the word 'similar' it is often taken as meaning 'the same' in this world. Anyways no big deal. I haven't used either tire so I can't really make a comment on their performance, I can only go by reputation and what others say. I haven't used Hakks since the early 90s, back then they were awesome tires. I can only assume they have progressively improved their performance also, over the years.

Thats good to know! I remember my old hakks, driving in a foot of snow on the 401. Everyone was slipping and sliding in others' tire rutts, I just drove into the deep snow and cruised at 80k with the utmost confidence...just awesome tires.

I had hakk5s on my old volvo 850.... that car was built like a tank/highway cruiser (autobahn high speed cruising wee)... it was awesome with hakk5s in winter! I was driving as fast/faster than trucks! And amazing control... In ice it was a bit so so.. but in snow wow! Controllable e-brake drifts too :D

Since I loved that I tire, I wanted to get the same for my 3... ordered Hankook W409 iPike as they are similar from what I see, read reviews on this tire too and everyone is raving about it so can't wait to install it this saturday. Thank God still no snow! I hate snow!

The hakk 7s look interesting!
