So besides the picture quality (and the scene selections), how is it any different than the old trailer?

This.
With a worldwide gross of over $1.8 billion, it was the first film to reach the billion dollar mark, remaining the highest-grossing film of all time for twelve years, until Cameron's next directorial effort, Avatar, surpassed it in 2010.
I'm guessing James Cameron wants a new yacht.

It's actually worth watching once. Not a bad movie really... It's just pathetic to see them breaking it out for a second round of profiteering so soon.
Kind of reminds me of Disney or George Lucas, milking their franchises.

I liked Titanic. I'm a sucker for ultra-sappy romantic movies. Titanic, The Notebook, anything of that ilk, sign me RIGHT up!
As for it being pathetic to rerelease a movie for making money... I'd do the exact same thing if I thought I could make money off of it :S Isn't that generally the purpose of making a film? To profit off of it? Sure it looks desperate, but you guys all remember the stories of the people who went to theatres like 8 times to watch the thing? Cash in on that absurdity if you ask me.

Not gonna lie, I went to watch The Lion King again in 3D a couple months ago and it was absolutely fantastic. Brought back great memories from my childhood ('89 baby, was 5 when the original came out).

Not sure how you missed it...
On point though, I was 12 when Titanic came out and I was fascinated by it at the time. The first half drags on, but the second half of the movie was awesome. I'm sure in 3D it will be great, considering its a James Cameron flick and he invented the whole 3D movie craze. He probably used the technology he created for Avatar to remaster Titanic in 3D. I personally can't wait to see it.

FYI - Avatar was filmed using stereoscopic 3D cameras, which is part of the reason it worked better than other pseudo-3D / post-processing solutions.

Lol.. what exactly was shot by a movie camera in Avatar :P

Well this won't be filmed using that camera since its already been filmed. I'm sure its still his own technology that is being used to create Titanic in 3D though.
Also, to answer the question of "Why?"
Cameron said "The aim was to release it in spring of 2012 to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the ship’s sinking."
