View Full Version : RPM surges and drops on my manual 2005 GT 3

I have a 2005 Mazda 3 GT. It has over 171,000km on it and has served me well since I bought it new at the end of 2004. I recently observed that as I accelerate the RPMs surge quickly, then drop about a grand or so, then slowly rise again normally. Problem is, I'm driving a stick and I'm NOT changing gears - this has never happened before. Any clues as to what this might be?

Is the engine actually surging or is it just the tach?

The engine itself is surging - I can hear it. How would it be possible for the RPMs to surge without the engine following suite? Just curious ... Thanks!

If the engine RPMs are surging randomly under acceleration my first guess would be the clutch is slipping. If so it will only get worse until you see the same sort of thing while cruising. Or the clutch will just give up and you will be stranded.

its clutch slipping. test it by puttign it in 5th gear doing about 30-40km/h and slowly press the gas, if the revs go up u need a new clutch

OK, I will test it and see what happens ...

5th Gear ... 40km ... slowly push the throttle to see if the REVs climb ...

Will report my findings ... thx

Validated that it is indeed the clutch ... 30km, 5th gear ... hit throttle and RPM surge ...


Anyone know of a reasonably priced mechanic ?? :)
