OK i purchased my 2005 Mazda 3 2.3l in mid October 2011 um all the fluids were changed in the car before i picked it up nd it had about 100 000 km on it and now i check my oil level at 106 km nd oil change is due at 107 500 and my dip stick is 100 % dry i never had any oil light on the car and i recently had a idle jumping issue and it was almost as the car is bogging down when i stop and the rpm would go up and down from 750 to 500 so ne who i changed plugs nd cleaned throttle body nd it got better then came back a few hrs later so checked oil nd went in to Mr lube for oil change nd the car is missing about 2 l of oil to 2.1 l of oil the guy was going to do an oil change but he said the oil filter was on to tight so he refused the oil change nd said go to the dealer nd ask them to see what the problem is Ur car is burning serious oil or leaking somewhere you cant really see. they looked under and couldn't see any oil leakage so he topped me up 2.1 L and then the dip stick was at the full marking ? does anyone know what is causing this or has anyone had this problem and know what i should do i still have extended warranty till January 24 2012 approximately 45 50 days left so i want to get this checked out asap nd get it fixed under my warranty ... the car has always been serviced at the dealer nd the last oil change the guy i purchased it from was at Prima Mazda nd all the regular maintenance was done on the vehicle when it was due

TL;DR

If you have warranty, go get it checked out asap. Otherwise, you are probably in for a new engine, as any "fix" will only help the problem short term (ie running synthetic or different grades of oil) but in the long run, it will only get worse.

"he said the oil filter was on to tight" - Cartridge filter housings have been known to crack when over-tightened. Check that you're not leaking any from the filter housing.

"i still have extended warranty till January 24 2012" - If you have extended warranty then bring it to the dealer and let them figure it out. That's what you're paying for anyway.

Also, the period, comma and enter keys are your friends.

What you are describing is a known problem with the 2.3L engine problem. I would take it into the dealer as soon as possible.

I also have a 05 3 with the 2.3L and am continually topping off the oil, probably a quart every 2000km. I switched to Amsoil synthetic a couple of years ago because I do so much driving. The car has 192000 km on it. It doesn't leak or visibly smoke, but the oil just disappears.

This is a common problem for 2.3L owners as for most cars that are getting older. Ensure the oil filter is installed correctly every oil change as its been known to crack from overtightening.

I have an original 2004 2.3L with 195,000km on it. Doesn't burn a drop of oil yet. Synthetic oil since day #2 and never abused.

Check if your PCV is not clogged as well

So is this something that mazda will cover? or does it have to be under warranty?

I'm having an oil consumption issue, about the same rate as described. I'll try to make it into a dealership this weekend to talk to someone there.

2005 2.3L.. w/ approx 160k on it.

To the OP; Just take it to a Mazda dealer you trust or know, get a new oil change done, put it on record with the dealer you think it may be loosing oil (record mileage). But once the new oil change is done; keep a record, check your oil periodically, say every 500 km and record oil level and mileage. This way you can actually tell if it's loosing oil and at what duration.

You never know, the oil change done before you picked up the car may not have been done correctly and with the proper amount of oil. (This is probably what the dealer will suggest anyways) as you need some kind of record.

Oh and make sure to double check the level after the oil-change.

Is all that driving mostly at highway speeds? If so, loss of oil in slight amounts is normal.

In my case.. my drive to work is approx 35km each way, mostly on the 401.. so its mostly mixed. But I'm losing approx 1L per 1000km.

I bought my car with 35k on it almost 5 years ago.. and like the link says, it only started happening after I hit 80k or so.

Why didn`t you bring it in sooner... Anyways let us know what the dealer tells you after your visit....One litre per 1000km is excessive oil loss and could fark your engine.

I always have oil in the car to top up often, and at first it wasn't this much consumption. Time flies when you get into a habit of doing things, and It only came up when I read that link in this thread.

did the OP ever fix the issue? The thread is like 6 months old!
