So my Warning Light is on. I bought a new battery, still illuminating. I think i need a new alternator, can anybody give me step by step directions on how to go about this. I really don't have the money to pay a mechanic to do this. I'm still in school. Also, does anybody know where I might be able to get an alternator for a reasonable price? most places i checked are asking for $300 for the part alone...

how long has this warning light been on? if you have been driving with it for up to a week, it may not be your alternator, because your battery alone will not last more than a couple days without recharge

$300 for an alternator is not out of line depending if it is a new unit or rebuilt. I think the labor to install one is about 1-1.5 hr's

as mazdy said try to find a rebuilt one, it will be cheaper. then call jimmy at SP and ask for a quote if you can't do it yourself.

Ya it will, depends what the output of the alternator is. Mine lasted 9 days with moderate daily driving ( < 20km a day), it depends on the situation. I would get a load test done on your alternator, this is why you don't just start replacing shit and properly diagnose issues.

If you want to make sure it is your alternator , take a multimeter and put it on the batery and while the car is running you should get atleast 14 volts with everything on .
My old Protege had the batery light on for 2 years and never died on me
