View Full Version : Odd heavy clunk/something shifted feel from car - not sure what it is
I've felt something weird from my car a couple of times lately. The most noticeable was when I was backing out a parking spot once and it felt like something heavy shifted - I stopped right away because it was like I hit something. I felt it again yesterday when I was slowing down for a red light - this one felt like it might have been the gear shifted weird. it was kind of the same feel though
Any clues as to what that might be? it's not a very good description I know lol

Does it happen while you're driving at a constant speed?

Next time your driving, pay attention when your coming to a complete stop. When you come to the stop release your brake and You want to listen if you hear a slight clunk from either one of your rear corners. I just have this feeling it may be your rear brake caliper-sliders seizing. I had similar symptoms and it ended up being the sliders needed lubing. It would actually jerk the car when they released.

no it doesnt happen when im driving, but when im backing up i dont think its speeding up that much. actually now that i think about it, this happened to me also 6 months ago when I was parking - the car jerked and i thought i hit something

i'll try that today to see. i haven't had any work done on my brakes for a while, changed over to winters myself in the cold
is this something i should have looked at right away? or can i wait until spring when i swap back to summers, look at the brakes at the same time?

I'd say the engine mounts since the passenger one is known to fail.

If it turns out to be your sliders, it isn't a real big deal but, you risk wearing the rear pads unevenly and possibly quicker then normal. If you don't live too far you may consider taking your car to JR Auto, they'll take care of it and at a reasonable price (they're located at Port Union and 401), or do it yourself.
