Saw a set of wheels on kijiji for a very, very cheap price so I scooped them up and have decided to perform a DIY paint job for a winter side project. At first I was going to just plasti dip them, but figured if I'm not even going to be able to mount them until the spring I might as well have some fun with them. After watching a ton of youtube "DIY rim painting" and seeing what works and what doesn't, I've settled on my course of action. I will be posting pics throughout the entire process. Figures crossed that it will turn out ok. Also, just for the record, I'm a complete noob at car DIY, but have already installed 6000k HID, rally armors, and installed an aftermarket single DIN stereo.... So i have found that all it takes is some internet/youtube research and the guts to just get at it.

So, let's get started....

Picked up these MSR 044 rims for next to nothing. There are some minor dings and a little curb rash, but for the moment, my car will not be a show car. This is merely a side project to get me through he winter. The tires will need to be replaced before spring.

Stopped by Crappy Tire to pick up some of the things I'll be needing. For starters, rim cleaner and two different sand paper grades. 120 and 220 (or something like that)

Washing the wheels... in my tub lol.

After I dried them off, I began to sand down the rims with 120 grade sandpaper. This removed the clear coat and smoothed out the rough spots. Once that was done, I took a finer grade sandpaper and skimmed over them again for good measure.

I've refinished rims before - and I have to say, that specific style of rim is very difficult.

Can't wait to see how they turn out.

A bit of advice - pay someone $20 to dismount the tires. It'll make it a shit load easier to handle, transport, hold, etc.

This made me :chuckle. Something about a tire being in a tub in the house just gives me the giggles.

I think gunmetal would work well with graphite.... but some may say that gunmetal is over done.... Hell with it, I say gunmetal

Gunmetal.... I like...... I just dont want the rims to match too closely to my car.... Maybe a darker gunmetal..... Hmmmmm

A couple of weeks ago I picked up a spray can of what looked like a metallic grey at Rona, based on the colour of the cap. It is Rona's house brand, I can't find any colour name or code on the can. Turns out it is a very sparkly metallic silver, not grey. Might look good, you'd need to get a can and do a test piece to see how it looks with the car.

It could also be interesting a base coat with a clear candy topcoat in a colour of your choice.

Well, I just bought some nice 2010 GT rims last night so I guess I should sell these... (more so seeing if there is any interest)...

They are sanded down and ready for paint! Tires are shot. Any interest please PM.

I'll make a FS/GI thread tonight ASAP.
